the hard drive in my macbook pro (15-inch, Mid 2009 A1286) is about to kick the bucket. Can I replace it with any 2.5 inch SATA drive ? for example this

Yes, that will work. I just changed one at the weekend, ended up putting in an SSD instead. If space is not a requirement then SSD is a nice upgrade. You can get a 64GB SSD for a little less than the one you have selected.

Whatever you go for, the easiest way to get back up and running is with carbon copy cloner. Attach the new drive externally, format it as mac os extended journal, setup the GUID partition and run a clone. Carbon copy cloner will take you through the steps.

yeah been thinking about the ssd option but they are still pricey (I do need on board storeage).

would this work ? ... small ssd as main drive and then regular drive in the cd compartment (http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/).

what kind of gb would i need for the the OS. I use alot of music programs (music production) I persume I'd install all them on the main SD drive and just use the regular hard drive to save stuff and use for assets (music samples etc)

    thanks again
