cyanogenmod 9 wifi issue

I have CM9 running on a Vodafone Smart 858/Huawei u8160. I tried to manually add entries to the wpa_supplicant.conf file in /data/misc/wifi. After a restart, in the GUI known networks, it listed the ones i'd added. After another restart, wifi wouldn't turn on. I did a restore and its fine again now. Any ideas?
