    As the title.

Had a standard sky + box in the bedroom for the past 7 years or so which has finally given up the ghost.

Going to pick up a cheap second hand HD box from adverts or done deal

Any recommendations as to which model (maker) to look out for when buying?

    Cheers

Yeah I pay subscription to them, I did cancel multi room though when the sky+ box stopped working.

Thinking of getting the HD box as if our when I get them to turn multi room back on, I'll at least have the HD version of the box.

(I already get sky hd in the living room)

Any of the new'ish Amstrad models with the 500GB drive would be your best bet, they seem to be reliable and are smaller than the original HD boxes.

Be very wary of buying second hand Sky boxes though, it has recently come to light that if money was/is owed on the account that the box is linked to, Sky WILL NOT pair the box to your card. Buyer beware.

I also have a spare Sky box and remote. The ordinary one not HD. I bought one of those combi boxes recently that get UK free to air channels via the existing dish and the SAORVIEW Irish channels via TV ariel. It will pay for itself in 3 months. No quibbles so far as it's working fine and I hooked it up to a hard disk to record programmes - though the programme viewer (electronic programme guide) is not up to much on the new kit and I'm having problems trying to watch another UK channel when I'm recording a UK channel. Keeps the bills down though.

Be careful if buying on done deal etc. I bought one last year & because the previous owner was arrears on the bill using that box, Sky would not validate it with my Sky card. Rookie mistake on my behalf but just so people know

^^ What he said ^^. A few years ago (while I was still a happy Sky customer) my sky box went faulty. I called up and they wanted a good few bob for it, so I was "advised" if I threatened to cancel, they would send me a new one... It worked a treat!!!

Just tell them you want to cancel it. Then in a week ring up and reorder and if they ask if you have an existing box say No :D

    Just an update on this.

Engineer came out , new box installed (unsure of the model, but it has WiFi etc) happy enough.

Then the lad set is it up for all the extra channels (itv etc) and checks everything else before he goes.

Tells me my signal is a bit weak and goes off to check my dish. Comes back and tells me my cable is damaged (chewed by dog) and hed replace it since he's there.

New box, new cable running from dish to bedroom etc.
    All for €25.

Cheers for the heads up guys.
