I only heard of this incident recently so decided to do a little research. The aircraft involved on the day was an MD-11 reg: N803DE
During its landing rollout on RWY 28 at EIDW, the MD 11, registered N803DE1 (Delta 129) started to initially drift towards the right and then slowly to the left-hand side of the runway. Efforts by the Captain, the pilot-flying (PF), to counteract this drift through the application of full right rudder and right tiller failed, and the aircraft departed the paved surface into the prepared graded ground, which was rain soaked.

It was the Capts last flight going into retirement........god love him. I'm sure he has got over it but not a way to end a long distinguished career.

Those bloody MD11s have crap rudder authority and didn't help the situation.
    Ps
Just reread the report after many years.....capt has only circa 70hrs in command on the md11 thus was highly inexperienced.......capt going for the tiller after loosing directional control was just hanging on for dear life as it was useless at those speeds. Report cites not enough down force on tiller and little aileron into wind used which would have encouraged the weather vane effect and lead to the Dublin airport ploughing championships. That incident could have ended up worse if a pod grabbed the grass...cartwheel etc.

A salutary reminder to those who think pilots are glorified bus drivers.......there's a lot more to it especially on those sh!tty days.

I wonder has that rudder problem since been addressed. The MD-11s are very popular amongst the Cargo Carriers

DM, the area surface of the rudder is the issue.....md11.s have had a checkered history and can be a bitch to land. See Md11 Lufthansa cargo bounced landing in the desert......I think elevator authority here was the issue. It predecessor the DC10 apparently didn't have these issues....maybe due light/shorter.

The MD-11 tailplane is about 30% smaller in area than that of the DC-10. Here is a "Flight" article:

It was a runway "Excursion" completely different to what a runway "incursion" is. We know what you meant though :)

Yep suppose they were lucky that everyone walked away without a scratch! Came across the Independents coverage of the event for another perspective.

Brilliant photos. Fantastic looking aircraft in great livery. A feast for the eyes.

Yep, a fantastic looking aircraft! Would love to have had the experience to fly on one, the only MD aircraft I've flown was the MD-80, many years ago with American Airlines. I think KLM are the one of the last carriers in the world to carry passengers on the MD-11 in regular service (I know World Airways still use them as Charter) and KLM are withdrawing them very soon also.
I suppose in future the only other way to get a trip on an MD-11 is to hide inside a Fed-Ex or UPS Cargo Crate! :D

Pilot deciding not to deploy slides and wait for a stairs, resulting in a 2 hour wait for said stairs? :(

If I was a passenger, I'd be tempted to deploy the slide myself after an hour.

    This too shall pass.

deploying slides is the last option and to only used where there is imminent danger to the aircraft and the passengers. Historically evacuations via slides have caused numerous injuries to passengers.

Wikipedia have an excellent history of the MD11 that explains the history of the problems with the FCS:

Looks like it happened fairly close to where the planespotters park up. I'd say it was some sight for them to behold.

It wasn't too long after that that they stopped sending the MD11's and L10-11's

Loved when the Tristar came to town !

The aircraft ended up roughly opposite the entrance to the long-stay car park.
