Im a first year doing arts, majoring in Politics and Economics and would really love to do a year abroad in 3rd year. What is the story with going about doing a year abroad? Who to contact/when etc?

Go down to the international office in the basement of the restaurant.
You can look at loads of info here
Keep your GPA up too. Some other colleges require it to be above a certain level before they'll take you.

GPA is a big player in some colleges alright. Especially in the likes of Eng. etc.

Also, you might want to consider finance. Going abroad isn't cheap.
