    Hi,

So I bought a motorbike in 2001 or so, but in 2006 I stopped using it, got a car and never looked back. Bike was sitting on my driveway for a couple of years, eventually something had to be done about it. So I had it brought to a mechanic to assess if it was worth fixing and selling or what. This was 2008. To be honest, the bike was just a rusty lump and had barely any actual value left.

The mechanic judged it wasn't worth repairing and I agreed. He kept the bike, and out of lack of interest on my part, I simply let it slip. We never exchanged documents or anything, he never rang again and that was it.

So now, back in 2013, am I liable to pay any road tax? According to one of my colleagues at work, I could be fined for the unpaid tax? My understanding is that I should only be liable to pay if I ever wanted to put that bike back on the road, but this is not something that is going to happen.

Sounds like I am probably panicking for no reason, but 7 years worth of motor tax, even if it is on a small 249cc bike is not something I'd like to face right now.

Realistically at this stage i wouldnt be worrying about it. I dont see you being chased up for the road tax. If he has already put it into his own name in ownership then your alright. They wont come chasing for back tax on it.

No your not liable for motor tax. Only if you were phtting it back on the road.

This needs a sticky with a big flashy title saying your not liable. There mist be one of these a day at this stage.

Well, my apologies, I always search before, but I never find anything on boards.ie. I'm not blaming boards, though, it is my searching skills.

He probably took the bike apart and used whatever parts might have been useful to him. But who knows, he might have repaired it in full and sold on! Either way, not my problem at this stage.
