I am looking at getting the new credit card style licence to replace my existing old style one which is valid for another 7 years, can I just apply for it or do I need to report my own lost in order to get it? Looking at the application form there's an "Exhange" option but seems to refer to swapping an EU licence for Irish or an "Other please specify" option, could these be used?

Reason I ask is from next Tuesday the application process changes and you then have to go in to one of the new NDLS centres to get one, at the moment you can just fill in the application and post it as per old process. It's not clear from the website if you can simply apply when you have the existing without declaring it lost or stolen www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Licensed-Drivers/Driving-licence/

You won't be able to apply for a new one until your current one expires.

If your current license were to go missing, or were to say take a trip through the washing machine then you could apply for a new one...

I'm going to do the "its lost" thing when I get back for xmas - is it as simple as saying "I've lost it?" Also I'd imagine the waiting times will be quite long still?

I changed mine (4 years left on it). It was in rag order & I sent it away with a letter stating that I wanted to change it because of the condition. Took six weeks, but finally got it.

Did the new one have 4 years on it or was it back to 10?

The licence/learner permit will be issued for the remaining period of the original licence/learner permit.

If you are looking to report it lost you need a Garda to stamp your application form. Starting Tuesday you will need to go to an NDLS centre as they take your photographs there with proof of ID and all that. Turnaround time should be much quicker!

8-14 days turnaround quoted by Galway NDLS office yesterday, I'm going in on Saturday morning.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

If you've recently changed address or have a different address on your license and can change to a new address you will get a new one and I think its free of charge
