thanks. That is interesting - I assume that RTE1 will soon stop broadcasting in SD given that 01 is now HD.

Obviously there will be 3 HD channels on mux 2 so that allows TV3 and TG4 to be added at some point i would have thought.

I just wish in the UK they would be more up to date with technology - we still have everything that is HD also in SD - and still no English regionalissation in HD.

Well done Ireland and RTE for being more innovative

Simulcast will continue for about 2 weeks
From today and for two weeks afterwards, viewers are advsied to re-scan their SAORVIEW equipment, which SAORVIEW said is "simple and should take no more than a couple of minutes by using the settings on either the television or Set-Top Box".

That is great that they can be that quick in switching off SD.

One big reason will be because they only have one "region" to deal with - as there is no regionalisation in Ireland.

I do know that Ireland appears to have stopped medium wave broadcasts but in the UK we still have them.

Even theough the UK has had TV and radio for longer, in my opinion, the infrastructure we have i still 20 years old for TV. Freeview here is a hybrid DVB-T MPEG2 signal and DVB-T2 MPEG4 signal. At present it looks like we will have to wait another 5 years before a DVB-T2 switchover in the UK.

For radio, in 1978, BBC persuaded people to switch from Longwave to medium wave, to keep listening to Radio 2, and during the overnight period, suggested FM. It was not until 1990 that there was an FM switchover for Radio 2, even though that had started in 1955. An announcement on radio is expected before Christmas.

So sorry if I have gone off topic, but that is why I applaud RTE for their innovativeness in having basically an HD switchover overnight.

    Well done!!!

They didn't 'switchover' anything. The only thing preventing HD transmission of RTE1 was lack of capacity on the single mux in use.

Everyone watching Saorview already has the necessary equipment, so no need for delays waiting for people to upgrade or 'interim' HD muxes to try to persuade them to hurry up.

Any sign of TG4 HD, wasn't it meant to be broadcasting ages ago?

I notice RTÉ One HD remains DOG free. A real shame that RTÉ Two HD is sticking with it.

They just haven't got round to designing one for RTÉ ONE HD yet probably. It will be back, and will be as bright and annoying and as big as RTÉ TWO's is.

It's testing on UPC cable, no Saorview plans that we know of.
