The wife was complaining that her phone was acting up real bad lately, turning itself off, freezing etc etc.

She had a few apps downloaded to the phone some of them could have been a bit dodgy, so I decided best remedy was prob a factory reset on it.

In my experience pictures, music etc usually remained on a phone after a factory reset, but everything is now gone

The phone is a Galaxy S 3, and I've been trying various recovery promgrames (recuva etc) but none of them seem to recognise the phone being connected to the computer. I.E right now the only option I get is C drive and D drive (though the phone is showing on my pc as GTI9300 but the recovery programme isnt recognising it.

The phone doesnt have an SD card, never had, and the pics arent synched with dropbox, google etc.

Anyone any pointers, she doesnt know this has happened yet.

I'd prefer to keep it that way too mind.

Check was Dropbox or Google plus installed... might have them backed up. Dropbox is a default on the s3.

If the photos weren't on the SD card unfortunately I'd say your sh1t out of luck, when there is an SD card inserted I think it may use that as default so what happened you does not happen... :(

If you have a photo app called G+ Photos chances are some gallery ones may have saved in there, best of luck....

Fingers crossed this seems to be working

    http://wondershare-dr-fone-for-android.software.informer.com/2.0/

Bit worried that it seems to be stuck at 23% for quite a while now though, and the estimated time to finish jumps wildly.

But hey. It's already found a dozen or so photos. Left it plugged into laptop working away. I'll set the alarm for early in morning and let you know.

    Im optimistic though.

    No good.

Recovered about 3 photos that were actually jpg ones, there was over 100 in png (graphics for programmes) . There literally was hundreds on it. Many of my daughters first year.

Photos should have been backed up but they weren't so no point in me going on about it. Lesson learnt.

Anyone think the chinese phone shops etc would be able to recover these?

I firmly believe they are still in the internal memory, but as I can mount the internal memory as a 'drive' to my laptop I become stuck.

Have you used a file explorer and checked yourself? Maybe in a folder called DCIM. Check everywhere in it.

    Yeah it says empty.

I know they're in there though. Very frustrating.

I'm pretty sure that the factory reset would have got rid of them, even from the deepest depths of the phones memory.

They're gone. Your GS3 works in MTP mode when connected to a PC, not like a regular USB drive, so you dont have the low level access for recovery.

Doing a reformat means a wipe of the NAND internal memory, nothing in there(except the recovery os partition) can remain and as there was no SD the pictures had to be deleted.

Dropbox camera sync rocks, worth a punt for future reference.

I know Dropbox and G+ Photos wasn't enabled but Facebook has an automatic photo upload feature too. Small chance she activated that if she uses Facebook a bit but worth a look.

Sorry Dudda. She's not on facebook either (she's a technophobe tbh)

There is a thread on xda here:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

But its a bit too full on for me, and I like to tinker with phones etc, but cant seem to get my head round the various processes.

Id say its my only hope though.

Thats for a Galaxy Nexus though?

Get her in the habit of using G+ Photos, all your photos automagically upload to a G+ profile in the cloud for you, very handy imo....

It should work on any device. From what I can iunderstand, it extracts all data from you internal memory, and then converts it to some sort of virtual hardrive which recovery software tools and deep scan.

This seems to be the only possible way of making the phone available as a drive on the computer, rather than a media device.

Data recovery.ie in Dublin have told me they think its possible to get the photos, but they need 45 up front to evaluate it, then if any pictujre files are retievable, they will give me a cost estimate (with the initial 45 coming off the price)

Dont worry, she will be most definitely be familairising herself with dropbox/G+ from here on in. In fairness though, this was my fcuk uo, not hers.
