Car vibrating when accelerating

My volswaggen passet starts to vibrate when accelerating, the problem is intermittent, does not really appear to happen when just driving around town really when I'm goin out the country and I'm tipping along and accelerating, once I take my foot off the accelerator it stops. As said above it is a intermittent problem and does not always happen but happens more times than not. When it starts vibrating if I put the car over and put the hand brake on it still vibrates

Any advice on what the problem could be?

    Diesel or petrol?

If diesel, could be the injectors.

Any difference when you clutch or declutch - if so, could be the clutch.

    Any loss in power?

could be a warped Brake disc.

    It's a Diesel

Have not really noticed anything with the clutch.

Now that u mentioned any loss in power I have noticed a slight chugging feeling (sluggish) ever so slightly tho only when accelerating when car is vibrating again its intermittent.

Had similar symptoms on a Pajero a few years back. It was the Dual Mass Flywheel letting me know it was thinking of calling it a day.

Suppose it could be one of a number of possible causes. I'll just leave it till next service is due and have them to take a look at it. Car has just being NCT back in June and all.

Does it happen at any particular speed?

    It's expensive!

Yea at about 100km/hr and above.

Does that narrow it down anymore?

If its still vibrating after you pull over (if I read your post correctly) my money would be on the dual mass flywheel too. Or if you're very lucky a motor or gearbox mount.

Could this just be a wheel balance problem?

EDIT: Still vibrating at stand-still .... not a wheel balance problem. Ooops!

It's just the above statement confuses me.

Have you changed your front tyres recently? I would check there first, especially so if they don't have the same treading.

Once it starts vibrating it stays vibrating even when stopped. Tyres won't cause that.

And if all comes to all and it is the dual mass flywheel, how much would that cost?

Dont know for the passat, but ballpark €700 to 1000. (including new clutch)
    For my car its €1100

    Edit: thats including labour.

Sounds like you have possibly a clogged fuel injector or bad fuel injector and your car is only running on all but one cylinder.

Just a quick update on my situation. I haven't got the car checked over yet but just there now when driving this morning the exhaust gas warning lamp lit up and is staying on constantly. I'm wondering now is this all interlinked? Could this shed anymore light on my problem?

I'm goin to get it checked tomorrow anyway.

Get her terracleaned. It cleans the entire exhaust system out. It would be worth doing on a daysul.

But do you think the exhaust gas warning lamp is now related to the vibration problem ie blocked fuel injector/bad fuel injector?

if one of injectors at fault , diagnostics will show it, one my friend had one injector faulty, but there is four of them, connected to vag-com , it pointed on first cylinder misfire. replaced first cylinder injector, all went good. Does it smoky , when it wibrating and you accelerate ?

It could be the EGR valve that's got cloged up with carbon deposits. The terraclean would flush out all the carbon deposits from injector to exhaust tip. I would start up just getting the codes read by a garage though.

At speed an annoying vibration comes into my car (406) but it's the gear linkage vibrating off the exhaust

If I were you I'd start looking at the rubber consumables like the bushes at the front, mounts etc

I would agree with other posters and say its the DMF.

I was wondering have you sorted this OP?

I have an audi A6 with what sounds like the same issue. Usually between 2000-3000RPM is when its worst. Only started happening in the last month. Feels like the car is being driven over rumble strips. When it happens if I pull over the car still vibrates. Also I have noticed the rev counter does not move smoothly when the issue is happening it kind of jumps through the revs.

Does not happen all the time only intermittently.

2 weeks ago replaced clutch and DMF and has not resolved the issue. (800€+VAT)
No warning lights on the dash

Car is going in for a service and timing belt tomorrow so hopefully they will find the issue.

No sorry I did not bring the car in to get checked over. My car is due for a service within the next few months so I'm goin to wait till then.

Did you resolve the issue yourself in the mean time? If so what was the problem?

    Thanks

Got the new TB done on Friday. When that was being done they changed the fuel filter as I found the same issue on a couple of the Audi forums and that was the first recommendation.

Car is running much better now. No sign of the vibration since and I did about 200km over the weekend. Fingers crossed that is all it was. :)

    Hey martineire

Just said I would give you a quick update. I have done about 800km since the work was done and not had a problem with the vibration since. Looks like the new fuel filter sorted it.

Just a quick update, diagnostics showed its an injector problem after all. Second cylinder is misfiring. Can anyone tell me where I can get a second-hand/Reconditioned injector. Think a new one is 600
