2ltr cdi Astra

I started an earlier thread about buying a car that got derailed by a thought about looking at a 535D. As a reasonable lowish milage example is outside my budget ( MAX15K) I had a look at alternatives.

I have been warned off the 2ltr tdi VW engine by 2 mechanics (I had been looking at a 170bhp passat) so went on a look for alternatives.

The pickings appear to be slim. Volvo appatently have a nice diesel with plenty of power but cannot find a nice one in budget. The honda 2.2 has a good rep but these are scarce and I have heard stories about the DMF.

Then I came across a 160bhp 2ltr cdi Astra.. This is the same engine as in the Insignia which I had in the past. Not the best diesel engine I ever drove but it had decent omph in the Insignia so should be great in the Astra.

Anyone have any comments, advice or alternatives.

This will be a main car so reliability is important and a 55km each way (motorway) commute combined with some business miles and personal miles has me looking at Diesel..

Slightly ot, but you'll have DMF problems with the majority of the above cars, not only the Honda.

It comes with the territory of a manual diesel unfortunately.

Valid point but I heard the Civic was particularly bad and expensive to replace. ..

I have the 165 brake version in an Astra GTC. I'm finding it decent enough, better than Mazdas 2.2 diesel and a previous 170 vag diesel. Power delivery is more linear than both and a decent spread of it - pulls well enough to past 4500rpm.

I've only put 12k on mine since I got it so it's a bit early to draw any conclusions up on reliability but i don't think there's any real horror stories based on owners forums.

There are reports of bad fuel economy - I'm averaging about 44mpg, worst was about 39 with a fair bit of town driving, best was 48. Not fantastic, but slightly better than the two engines mentioned above in my use.

For some reason it seems to be a lot quieter in the astra than the insignia too.
