Just wondering could anyone help me out here. I only have a canon 1100d with the usual kit lens.have it for 2 years now but I'm losing interest because I got into taking shots with a Pentax super zoom bridge camera. Mostly severe that one but now I wan to take action shots and need a zoom lens that's not cripplingly slow. I'd have an interest in shooting rallying but would like to get into field sports too.
I've read that the next canon 55-250 would be the next step but reviews say its slow. Now I havnt got thousands to spend, not even one of them so something for a few 100 would be my limit. Also are tamron lens that much better than sigma? Compatibility wise?

Save some penny's and get a Canon 70-200 F4 L second hand ones cost around 400 to 500 these days and I think its a steal for such a quality glass.

hi - another vote for the Canon 70-200 F4. I got mine new from Birmingham Cameras for €600. If you don't have a problem avoiding customs & excise charges you can buy them for around €500 plus postage.

If you're shooting in daylight or happy to use a decent flash the F4 will be perfect. The AF is super quick and for the money, you're getting an L lens at the end of the day. I shoot aircraft with mine a lot and it rarely lets me down. I know it might seem expensive but if you go and spend 300 quid, you'll end up kicking yourself and not saving a bit more.

Shot this with the 70-200 at the weekend.

I am going to add another plus one for the canon 70-200 F4. While it its a bit away from your budget, it is a great lens. It has a decent consistent aperture of F4 and coupled with a crop body gives a nice focal range of 112 to 320. I have shot some rugby with mine and it gives some great results.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I won't be getting a lens for a while then

Another vote for the 70-200 F4 lens. Its nice and light and does most of what the 2.8 version can do.
