A question about students and rent allowance.

Ok so basically to get to the point.

I live at home with my parents, I'm in my mid-twenties with a dead-end part-time job (dead-end because it has absolute no chance for progression whatsoever). I would like to go back in Sept. 2014 as a mature student.

I could 'settle' for a course I'm half-hearted about so that I can stay living at home rent free or take the plunge and move to Dublin where the course I have always wanted to do is.

Problem: There is no way on earth I can afford rent in Dublin.

Is there anyway that potential students like myself who have been in receipt of Casual JA and will be entitled to BTEA can qualify for Rent Allowance in the above circumstances?

I am aware there is a kind of 6 month rule type thing whereby you have to be renting and paying full rent for 6 months but even if I managed that would rent allowance for me be a possibility.

    Any help much appreciated.

I was was in college receiving BTEA and rent allowance also. But I'm more worried for you not getting BTEA as I thought you had to be on JA for more than a year to receive it. Also another thing about RA is you have to be renting for six months(or maybe four I forget) before you receive it, but what I did is got the land lord to put down on forms to say I was renting there for six months.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes it is 6 months. You were lucky that you had a decent landlord that was willing to do that for you, I thought landlords hated rent allowance people to begin with.

To be honest I don't mind if I have to pay 6 months if there was an end in sight but I couldn't commit to a year never mind 4 years.

I have received Casual JA for over a year, I work part-time.

I'm glad to hear that it is an option though as I thought it would be too good to be true.

What is story though about applying, I'm in Sligo so would I have to apply for it in Dublin?

And something else in case you might know the answer - if you get accepted is that indefinite then unless your financial circumstances change? Like if I was to get accepted would I have it for the 4 years then?

Yes you will have to apply in Dublin. It will be to the local(for the area) community welfare officer.

Yes you will keep it but they send out forms every year that have to be filled in by you and your landlord, and they ask for six months bank statements, you will need them as well for applying in the first place as well.
