R9 280x and PSU - HELP!

So I've been planning to buy a 280x for a while and after much research I have discovered that the Sapphire Toxic version is by far the best, however, its monstrously big at over 12 inches and is too long for my case as the hard drive bays get in the way.

This leaves me with some other options such as the ASUS DirectCU II TOP which seems to be a close second in speed but is more expensive and is a few fps lower in most games. (the toxic is close to the stock 780).

Any other suggestions?

My other worry is that my current PSU will not carry the card.

i5 4670k 3.4ghz
Asus H87-Plus
8Gb Kingston Hyper-x 1600mhz
1Tb Seagate Barracuda
Corsaire CX500M 500W Modular PSU

The psu will be fine. Get any card that has a good cooler.

The Asus one is one of if not the best cooler so go for that if the price is right but there are many with good coolers.

They should all overclock to similar levels anyway.

What about the ASUS 280X Matrix? Is it worth the extra money?
It's 50 euro more and for that money i could buy a larger case...

It'll clock higher. Those chips are binned very highly and you have access to high voltages.That's about it. It's not worth it price/performance-wise. There was an 7970 matrix (same as 280x Matrix) for 222 pounds recently on Overclockers, but it's back up to 280~ now, that was a steal for 222, but at 280 it's not worth it.

Its the back part of the drive cage that is causing problems for the Toxic... Would it be HUGELY inadvisable to cut a small portion out?

A 7950 is still the best value you can get to be honest. Overclock that and you will have 280x performance.

Have decided to mod the case and go for the Toxic. I agree with your 7950 point but I have my heart set on that Toxic!
