Grpahing problem in Open Office

Hello all. I am having a major headache with trying to graph some data in Open office, I knwo it can be done, and is probably very simple, but answers elude me.

I was going to post this in the computers forum, but I think this is more suited to the mathematical mind.

Basically, i must plot energy consumption per capita as a function of GDP per capita and get something like the first graph on this webpage

    http://secondlawoflife.wordpress.com/2007/05/17/energy-consumption-and-gdp/

I have the data "energy consumption per capita" and "GDP per capita" as two columns in my spreadsheet, i just need to know how i put GDP on one axis, energy on the other, and then name the points when they plot out, easy, i hope.

I have been struggling with this for hours, any help would be appreciated as it would allow me to actually get stuck into my assignment, which is actually about global energy supplies

    Many thanks

Add an extra column at the left for your data point labels.
highlight all 3 cols to generate the XY graph.
In chart wizard ensure that on step 2, the "first column as label" is clicked,
In step 3 delete your X column from the data series window.
(it would plot these as well if left there)
    Finish the plot.

Click any cell to unselect the graph.
Right click on the graph , select edit.

On the top menu list select Insert, Data Labels.

Tick the Show category option, the placement list will determine the label position.

    Click OK and its done.
