Hi all. We're debating at home whether to apply to be a registered beef producer with An Bord Bia. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it? Bit afraid of unneccessary inspections etc! Any advice is appreciated!

To be honest wouldn't know to much but I know it certainly helps if you say your bord bia approved when selling etc, more inspections if you have nothing to hide there shouldnt be a bother just make sure the place is fairly tidy

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I understand you'd be thought of more when approved. I know what you're saying about the inspections, still doesn't stop the palpitations when you see the inspector coming!

Any lad I heard of who had a BB inspection said the inspectors are sound, doctors differ and patients die so I assume they're not all alike no more than any other walk of life. Best thing to do is ask your neighbours what the lads or ladies inspecting them are like and what they look out for.

there is nothing to worry about the inspection

it's like taking a car for the nct if something is wrong you fail likewise with qa

failure to keep the animal remedy records is the biggest stumbling block
lately it involves a bit more of health and safety and environment care , but the auditors are usually sound

we had the inspection lately for beef and lamb and the inspector gave me some good pointers I would need for the dairy inspecton next time round

I thought he was one of the soundest guys that ever came into the yard ,

at the end of the day they can only log what they see or what you tell them

Well that's very true Jo, they could point out something that needs improving that you just don't notice.

Our neighbour got a scourging by an inspector lately, he was a department man though.

an inspection from bb is nothing to worry about. they don't want you to fail and wont fail you unless something is very wrong. as said before records for medicines is their big issue,i.e. not killing anything within withdrawal periods from doses etc.

All the inspectors are sound, they only give a farmer two inspections (usually every 18 months) before they are 'moved on'. Never had any issues, only that one or two were a bit pedantic, and a bit pathetic with what they'll find wrong sometimes, just don't have any serious hazards, have your records up to date and it's easy.

It's impossible to get 100%, there's always room for improvement, but it really took the biscuit when my brother was docked points for having his machinery parked in a 'haphazard way' :D:D:D:D. He'd stopped the tractor in the middle of the yard to go for lunch!!

You usually get a report with your card notifying you of any areas needing improvement, or as I feel, just educating me to give different answers next time;)

It's the Meat Processors who you should be concerned with , The Bord Bia DNA Traceback bullology is just that bull. I have seen first hand the systematic fraud where cheap imported meat is processed and labeled as 100% Irish Bord Bia Approved Produce , All the documentation is falsified and its rampant , This produce is destined to Irish Owned Supermarkets and not the ones owned by our german cousins. I buy all my meat from a local busy butcher who has his own farm etc..
