At the risk of another political thread, what exactly did they do to the country?

The way I see it is that any other political power would have done the exact same thing had they been in charge then.. agree/disagree/thoughts?

(no bashing me, I'm not too knowledgeable and want to know more info and opinions).

EDIT: Some specific answers please.. Preferably not "they were *****", I know AH isn't the place for it, but it is the most used forum so I wanted to read some of your thoughts.

That's a far longer answer than AH can give.

The steamed the economy forward like the Titanic, throwing lifeboats into the boilers to make it go even faster according to the wishes for the first-class passengers. They ignored ice warnings, ploughing ahead, further and further until the thing finally struck ice and began to sink.

And to keep the ship from sinking they threw the poor people overboard while keeping the lifeboats for themselves and their first class friends and leaving everyone else to either take their chances and swim for it to foreign shores, or try and bail the ****er for dear life.

Or something. Any tale of incompetent hubris will do.

In case you missed it. Theres €80bn gone to the banks. About €30bn or more to Anglo alone. Anglo was by no reasonable measure a "bank". It was a casino.

They screwed you over there. Previous to that they got into bed with every other lobby group that could possibly cause trouble and paid them off.

    TL\DR great bunch of lads.

FF made a balls of a lot of things and had more than their fair share of cronies. Ahern was a criminal and Cowen incompetent.

However I was listening to Mario Rosenstock, Lucinda Creighton and an English journalist on Pat Kenny this morning and as Rosenstock (who said he was apolitical) and the English journalist rightly pointed out, FG/Labour were applauding all the schemes FF wasted money on or shouting that it wasn't enough. Even Creighton had little to say in defence.

I struggle to believe we would be significantly better off regardless of who was in power.

FF are the greatest political party to reign over Ireland, we should all feel very humble and privileged that we have such an effective and awe inspiring political party in our country.

I have no problems with FF in general in terms of what they did , I do not believe they could have done much else (well apart from not stepping back and looking at the signs) it's just a lot of FF politicians are too focused on getting elected for their own constituencies and not for the good of all people in the country and this leads to major corruption. Willie O'Dea is the example in my own town, he's a massive photo opportunist sticking his nose into every story to do with any problems the people have. Seriously he's in every photo in the local papers as if he would have done that while in power. Chancer.

...As an aside, I was surprised that Rosenstock came across like a bit of a jerk in the interview. I think he made some valid points but I got the impression Creighton didn't challenge him because he was being a little combative in an otherwise relaxed Friday lunch time gig, and he was clearly intended as the light humour guy. Comedians taking themselves seriously in the media...meh... stick to the impressions Mario.

Willie is big in Japan also.

FF fixed the roads, gave us sanitation, a roof over our heads and a sh1tload of cheap cash. They're bang on with me. Not like this shower of Budget-pinchin-trokia-crawling-holier-than-thou-d1ckwads

If FF are going to screw you they will tell you first. They will go on RTE and talk about tightening belts in €2k shirts. I like their style. Proper elites.

    We invited them in.
Then they asked to use the toilet and assured us it was only a number one. Before we knew it they had gone out the bathroom window and shat all over the floor. They even robbed the picture off the wall and took the air freshener.
    They're scum.

Alot of people of Ireland followed them into the hole they created, you bought up their **** and bought houses that were far over valued, and yet you sit here giving out about them maybe 10% of the complaints about them come from people that didn't get sucked into the massive pitfall they created and as always you create another blame thread for mostly your own ignorance just as much as theirs. Maybe we can group these members into a usergroup and start bashing them. This recession was brought on by everyone now we must all pay as we all reaped the rewards.

They are a political party and as such are after one thing only.......their own pocket. It doesn't matter which party you mention - if you could get the truth from each and every one, they would say that they are looking after themselves first and to hell with the country.

    GRRRRRRRR

While all that is true it's somewhat depressing that all the other parties criticised them for not spending more and taxing less the whole time.

Do you really believe that? Do you not think that lowering stamp duty, pumping the property bubble, the SSIAs, narrowing the tax base, guaranteeing the banks blindly for billions did not exacerbate the problem. This recession was brought on by a few, and if you buy the "we are all to blame" you are deluded. And its a total disservice to most people in Ireland who never saw a boom, but certainly see a bust. Sorry.

What's the point in asking these questions if nothing is done about it?

The previous government sucked. The current one sucks even more. That's the case with every government these days.
The point is, who actually does any bloody thing any longer... that helps the greater cause rather than themselves.
They're all in it for the pensions ROI etc. If you could get in, you would be there too.. and then fe*k everybody else as well.

That's not the best way to see it - maybe (even probably) FG would have done the same thing but the 'sure the other lot are as bad' argument is as lazy as it gets.

Whether or not FG would have done the same had they been in power, FF actually did bankrupt the country, and for the 3rd time as far as I can recall.

Historically FF had a bit of form in terms of being more tolerant of low standards within their ranks, though it might reasonably be pointed out that this perhaps had more to do with them being in power most of the time than any inherently higher standards in other parties. I have been a long time critic of them for this reason but I would certainly say they have improved considerably on this front.

What did they do during the “boom” years? Basically, they failed to manage a property bubble, just as many governments in the past in other countries failed, just as they will again in the future in other countries, including this one. And the revenue that this “boom” generated essentially delivered FF their hat trick of administrations so there was very little incentive for them to do the right thing.

And for me, therein lies a problem. There will be a future Irish government who will do the same thing because our 5 year election cycles encourage politicians to devise policies where the benefit is short term.

We can have our little parlour game of who can come up with the vilest adjectives for FF. But if we fail to learn what the actual problem was and just assume we were unlucky to get a bad dose of politicians, bankers and developers all at once, we have little chance of averting another property crash in the future.

You know what I find gas? Michael Martin and co trying to play the white knights of the downtrodden, when FF never gave a **** about matters like education and health for the more vulnerable in society. But that's politics for you, people will for it again.

Oh they did a lot, probably way too much to list. Of course they were totally unchecked and unblocked, thanks to a completely balless opposition who did absolutely nothing to raise a red flag.
