cancelled sky - cant get any channels now on tv

I cancelled my sky subscription recently, it was always to an old Sony tv of mine, its not saorview. When I turn my tv on.now the sky menu comes up but I can't view any channels, just says the card is not valid.

I presumed it would work as a saorview type box, but no joy.

Is the box of no use to me now? Should I just buy a satellite box now? I live in mayo so not sure if I would get free to air channels..

    Any advice much appreciated :)

Take the card out and power off the sky box. Turn it on with card out and see what you get. Some boxes work without any card, but some need a freeview card. Have a search across the TV forums, some good threads there.

Internet (google or what have you) "freesat on sky box" will give you a gazillion links to how to convert the sky box to receive free to satellite. You will need an Ariel and saorview box for the irish channels

Ariel is washing powder (capital letter). You actually need an aerial.

Lads thanks a million for the replies. Very helpful and I've got sorted!

I took the sky card out, pulled the plug out and all the cables from the box. Left it about a minute then put cables back in (but not the card) and switched it back on.

No Irish channels but went through the list and so far have S4c, Pick, BBC 1 and 2 which is brilliant, the main channels I wanted and challenge tv ! Will keep looking though for more!

    Thanks again:)

There are no such things as freeview cards. Freeview is a UK free to air system through an aerial.

Sky provide free to view cards to UK residents only at a cost of £25 every 5 years which give a few extra channels which are not worth having.

Free to view cards are well worth having for any1 that has a hd box as you will need one to turn the box back to providing the english fta channels on a hd box as sky blocks out most channels on them...

If I borrow a NI freesat card and use it in my Sky HD box will the UK channel line up stay on the box when I remove the card?

    Thanks.

it will until you unplug the box or if you go into any interactive settings it may return so it will be only a temporary fix....they are available online for approx 20sterling..

You could always buy a Freesat PVR and type in an NI (or English/Welsh) postcode and you'll have PVR functionality .

UTV HD launches on Freesat the Monday after next.
