New TV- Go for Internet Smart TV or not

Thinking of dropping Sky ( cant justify monthly cost). Getting Saorview through my aeriel. Must buy new TV for second room in house, & want to be able to get Free To Air satellite, & connect it to the internet for Netflix etc. Trying to decide whether to buy Internet Smart TV, or Non Smart TV & PVR such as Triax TSC114 or Humax HDR 1000S, to connect to internet.
If I go for Smart TV, will I still need PVR to record TV programs - if yes, my hunch is to go for Non Smart TV & PVR.
Don't know a lot about these things. Any help appreciated.

My Samsung Smart TV has Soarview built in and is able to pick up the Freesat channels from the UK, all with an EPG.

It has all the smart features for Netflix etc.

You can also plug in a Hard Drive to record.

Thanks Irishfreeview - few queries -
What model No. is your Smart Samsung. Where buy. What Price.
Are you getting Freesat through a satellite dish, or aeriel.
You have Hard Drive to record - do you not need PVR - can you pause & rewind live TV.

    Hi ya,

    Jsut seen your reply.

My Samsung is the ES6300, I think they have been replaced now so you would need to see what the new models are.

Got mine from Currys for €900 on offer, its 46 inch.

Im using my exisisting Sky dish that has a spare cable from the Octo LNB feeding directly into the TV and another cable from the aerial for Saorview.

You need a hard drive to record to, I did try using a Pen Drive but this didnt work, heard it has to be at least a write speed of 8mps. I havent tested the record capability because I record using my sat receiver but according to the instructions it does include timeshift recording.

These are the specs for the model I have, just a smaller screen.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-37-inch-UE37ES6300-Freeview-Freesat/dp/B007JUREYE

If looking for a dual set from Currys look at their UK site as they tell you if the TVs have both Freesat and Freeview ( saorview capable) TV`s. On their Irish site they wont tell you the model has a Freesat tuner built in, they just mention a Saorview capable set.

    Hope this helps.

The premium on a decent smart TV is more than a notebook with HDMI. Most need an expensive tablet to control and are pathetic for features and updates compared with OSX, Windows or Linux Mint / Linux Ubuntu etc.

    +1 on this.
Recently bought a Samsung 6800 series, with Sat Tuner and "SMART" functionality.

The good - Netflix and RTE player work fine.
The bad - It is severely limited in what apps you can install, partly due to memory, partly their regional restrictions. I had to set it to UK region so I could download BBC iPlayer, ITV Player etc and it promptly scrubbed all the Irish apps. And vice-versa when changed back to Ireland. As a web browser it is next to useless. Also, most Apps will not start up if the TV can't connect to Samsung's central server even though your connection to Netflix or wherever is OK.

Also, you really want a keyboard/mouse rather than typing letter by letter on your remote. Guess what, you are tied to Samsung proprietary peripherals (only drivers for their kit are loaded). Same goes for a Webcam if you want one.

Anyhow, that's Samsung and I regret the extra I splashed out for the SMART functionality. Can't speak for any of the other brands.

I'm getting a TV for the kids room shortly and will be using an Android stick or Raspberry Pi with that one.
