need a bit of advice here if anyone can help. my husband recently came into inheritance while on jobseekers but has since taken ill so is off it while waiting for disability to come through. in the mean time he has nothing (I am on disability for life) but has been told to go to the CWO. i rang them and they asked for bank details but my husband says there is no point as the money he got would in his inheritance would stop him from recieving anything. he recieved just short of 9 grand. can he get anything as we have earmarked the entire 9 grand for school for our 3 year old girl

I'm really not sure but can you claim for him as a dependant?

Is your child already on your claim?

If so it would be €188 for you, €29.80 for child and €124 for husband.

I thought the threshold for no help was €20,000. €9,000 seems very small.
Capital and property not personally used

Capital includes property (not your home), savings and investments.

If you own property (excluding your home) or you have investments or any other form of capital, the value is assessed, using a standard formula (see below) whether or not you are getting an income from the property or investment. If property is rented you will not be assessed on the actual income from the letting. Any outstanding mortgage registered against the property is deducted from the market value to find the capital value.

The property and investments that may be assessed include savings in a bank account (or anywhere else), a house that you have let and stocks and shares. If you or your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant saves a portion of your social welfare payment each week, these savings as well as savings from most other sources will be taken into account as part of your means.

The formula for assessing the value of capital including property (but not your own home), savings and investments is as follows:

    Capital Weekly means assessed
    First €20,000 Nil
    Next €10,000 €1 per €1,000
    Next €10,000 €2 per €1,000
    Balance (€40,000 +) €4 per €1,000

Yes, he would be entitled to Supplementary Welfare and, on the face of it, just €4,000 of the €9,000 would be assessed as means at the rate of €1 per €1,000.

For all social assistance payments, except Disability Allowance and Supplementary Welfare, you can have €20,000 capital before means testing applies.

For Disability Allowance, the ceiling is €50,000 before means testing kicks in.

For Supplementary Welfare the ceiling is €5,000 and after that the following scale applies:

The formula for assessing means from capital for Supplementary Welfare Allowance is as follows:

    Capital Weekly means assessed
    First €5,000 Nil
    Next €10,000 €1 per €1,000
    Next €25,000 €2 per €1,000
    Balance €4 per €1,000

    Hiya
If your husband is/has started work then he is probably going to claim all the tax credits that you both are entitled to so that he would hardly have to pay any tax.
That would be a good idea.
Your daughter cannot be an adult dependent. That’s only for adults who are in a relationship with one another.
She can be his or your child dependent until she’s 22 as long as she’s in college.
