    Hiya

Ive got a 2003 Volvo S40 1.8 petrol with 90k on the clock. It passed the last NCT with no issues and still has a few months left before the next one is due. However, it recently developed some dangerously sounding noise near the front left wheel, possibly CV joint or drive shaft.

The bodywork is in fair condition, clutch hasnt being replaced in 5 years, and for the last couple of years there has being some noise from the engine when idling (VVT).

I guess im just looking for confirmation that scrapping it is the sensible option..Any recommended scrap guys who would pick it up? (battery is dead, tax out of date, no insurance etc..)

    Cheers!! :)

Get it looked at and a price on how much it will cost to fix, then decide if it is worth repairing.

Agree with Bazz. Noise from the front left wheel may not be a biggy.

Put it through the CT and you will know then if it needs alot to repair.

Scrapping will get you much less than the car with NCT, even if you had a fail sheet and it wasn't too bad you would get a bit more for it.

What do you mean by the highlighted piece? I've a '98 car still on it's original clutch.

As has been said put it in for the test and take it from there. How often is the oil changed? No harm in getting someone with knowledge of Volvo's to listen to the noise. It may not cost much to put right.

if you don't want to go through all the hassle I'll give you 250 quid for it, in your hand.

Im getting the feeling that i was a little quick to consider scrapping it :)

@bazz: I was considering getting it towed to a garage or getting a mobile mechanic out to look. This would seem the prudent option alright.

@renofan. I guess im heavy on clutches :) The clutch is in working order but is pretty 'hard', which I would imagine for somebody not used to it would be a problem.

I had a volvo specialist look at it a couple of years ago and they said only Volvo would fix the VVT issue. Volvo quoted 700 to fix. I figured the noise is loud enough to put off buyers so making the scrappage look like a reasonable option.

@billJ: There is 5 months NCT left on it.

@padma: I might take you up on that if the mechanic gives the thumbs down!
