Adding partner onto my car insurance policy...

Just got a horrendous quote from my usual broker for this years car insurance...they explained that it is because there is no more reductions for female drivers any more...(this quote was for €200 more than last years premium)
This lead me to shop around obviously & after talking to another broker I was told if I add my partner (who has his own car & own policy) to my policy it will come in as significantly cheaper...
Sure enough after ringing back my own broker & asking to add my partner, I got a re-quote of €100 less...they assured me it has nothing to do with, & won't affect, his policy...but she didn't explain why it comes in as cheaper.

Could someone explain this to me maybe!? :)

Presumably your partner is seen as a lower risk than you, so their driving the car sometimes lowers the overall risk profile.

It comes down to risk, if you were the only person insured on the car, then it would be seen in the eyes of the insurance as you driving the car 100% of the time, when you add a more experienced driver (not saying that your partner is or is not) the rates can be cheaper if its seen as a 50% split risk between you and your partner.

Most insurance brokers tend not to explain how savings are had, this is down to how they underwrite a policy. It may very well be the case that they have an underwriter that prefers 2 people on a policy over 1 person.

Its all guess work unfortunately but one thing is certain, your partners no claims will not be effected as in order to insure under his NCD would require his NCD cert from his current insurer.

Must get her to price putting me on hers, 5 years NCB but still a 23 yo male so dont think it will bring it down

Also if you add your partner to your policy there is an increased chance that your partner at the very least will call them for a quote when his/her policy is up for renewal. Its a great way for the insurance company to open up more revenue streams.

Me and my gf have both our houses and cars insured with the same company.
