Anyone know of a good place that specialises in this kind of work in Dublin and what I should expect to pay?

Pretty p***ed off it's gone after 100k km.

Are you sure it's gone? Has it been diagnosed properly?

It has, feed pipe is covered in metal shavings and the guy even got a camera down to take a picture of the blades, it's completely knackered.

The garage I'm dealing with at the moment seem good but I just want to get a few alternative quotes to get a feel for how much it should be. They've offered me a VW reconditioned or a turbotech reconditioned, huge difference in price between both.

Anyone have any experience of turbotech?

    Why did it shat itself?

That's an excellent question, I have no idea. Car only had 32k km when I bought it and it's been serviced regularly, topped up with plenty of oil etc. May have gotten a bit low once but surely that couldn't be the cause on it's own?

The guy said he'd inspect everything as he dismantled it to see if he could find a root cause, if I go with that garage.

Just had the timing belt done a couple of weeks ago to make things worse.

Thats the first question id be asking. Could be a failed bearing, ingested a foreign object, starved of oil etc. The only way is to fully dismantle the turbo and oil ancillaries.

Just another aspect to look at before replacing the turbo to prevent it happening again :)

Yeah I've been doing my research and I definitely want to get some kind of answer to that question, last thing I want is to be in this situation again in 6 months time.

I have never seen turbo failure on a Mk5 GTI before and we look after a lot of them.

I would definitely recommend removing the sump to check the oil pump pickup and oil pump drive.

Also make sure a new turbo oil feed line is fitted.

How long is it since the oil was changed?

    K04 upgrade time !

    Never, really?

A new oil feed line will be fitted alright, that was part of the quote. The car was just serviced when the timing belt was done 2 weeks ago. Before that I had gone maybe 1000-2000 km over the recommended service interval but I top the oil up regularly. It does use a fair bit of oil between services, I think the oil light came on once about 6 months ago and I topped it up straight away.

    K04 upgrade time !

It did cross my mind until I found out all the other stuff I'd have to buy as well.

Does anyone know how much I'd be looking at for that, realistically? I'd assume 4 or 5 grand.

I'm betting your car is 2005 or 2006? with an axx engine? The very 1st of the mkv gti's had turbo problems, even the last one I broke only had something like 88k kms on it and had an almost full main dealer service history. And when we stripped it the turbo was seized solid.

Dont think it would be that much for a basic setup but ideally youd want to be upgrading exhaust, downpipe, intake pipe and air filter, intercooler and possibly bigger injector plus a custom map.

Standard turbo, exhaust upgrade and a remap would be my choice for a daily driver.

Still, I'd also want to know the cause of the turbo failure.

Cause of the turbo failure has been identified:cool:

I need help from someone with a mk5 golf GTI, in the attached pic I've circled in red a bolt hole beneath the carbon cannister on the left hand side of the engine. Can someone who has a GTI please have a look at their engine and take the same picture for me? The white plastic pipe in the pic is for the windscreen washer fluid inlet. I think it's a Torax head bolt but I need to be sure that this is where the bolt came from.

A Torax head bolt was found inside the turbo btw. 2 Weeks after the car was serviced and timing belt changed.

The garage in Swords (can I name them?) are being less than co-operative to say the least.

Don't see a pic. If you pop it up I'll have a look when I get back to the car after work.

    Uploaded pic this time:o

    Thanks, I'd appreciate it.

It's a regular 10mm bolt that goes there, not a torx.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭rickyjb

Hmmm, thanks George. Are there any bolts in the picture I uploaded that are different to the originals?

It'd still be great to get a picture of that area just so I can see exactly what all the bolt types are.

All looks original in the picture, apart from the missing one obviously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,561 ✭✭✭rickyjb

Thanks again George. I'm seriously confused now though. There must be 2 missing bolts, the one in the picture and another torx one from somewhere around the timing belt. Which was possible replaced when the turbo was being done:confused:

Either way it's a VW bolt that was removed from the turbo so it came from somewhere.

The timing belt cover is held on with torx bolts.
