Buying a camera in Argos?

I’ve decided to buy a Nikon D3100...my first DSLR. Argos are selling it for 379 (camera, lens, bag), almost 70euro cheaper than most camera shops. I’ve bought lots of cheaper things in Argos over the years but...I dunno, is it ok to buy a camera there? The website doesn’t mention a warranty but I think insurance is available.

I guess this is a silly post but I’m just wary from spending so much (for me) if there is no comeback. Has anyone bought from there?

Your consumer rights are exactly the same in Argos as with any other retailer. I would advise you to give the insurance a miss though! its usually expensive and difficult to claim. If you do, make sure you read the policy to see what exactly is covered

Yeah, I bought my first DSLR there, a car stereo and a netbook. No problems with warranties. The stereo was replaced (and at the same time upgraded) with no fuss when it was DOA, and with the netbook I was issued a partial refund due to a change from the advertised specs.

If the price is good, go for it.

Its fine buying from Argos. You still have all the same warranties as buying from any other Irish seller, statutory rights. Not sure about the Argos 16 day money back guarantee on cameras though.

I bought a Nikon D40 kit there for €300 about 5 years ago when it was about €150 more expensive everywhere else.

I think Nikon have a cash back offer on at the moment with that model included so you should get a few quid back as well.:)

    Hi there,

I bought my Nikon D 3000 in Argos a couple of years back and got a great price at the time €100+ less than other retailers, the thing about Argos is that unless the salesperson happens to own one (of what ever you are contemplating buying) themselves then you will know more about the product than they do which can be a real pain in the ass if you encounter a problem, having said that the are very good when it comes to refunds generally. Just a point to watch for here Argos sell two versions of this camera kit the VR (vibration reduction) and non VR version with a small price difference between the two. The VR mechanism is integral to the lens and helps to eliminate camera shake which I think is beneficial to users novice or otherwise.

    Brendan.

It didn't actually come with a bag but they are doing a deal where you get 10euro off certain bags when you buy a SLR. At the moment you also get a 10euro gift card when you spend over 100euro so I put that towards a memory card :)

And I bought this bag for 29.99 (was 39.99)

that camera is 380 in argos, and 430 for what appears to be the same config in conns.
i'd suggest going into conns or gunns and asking can they match argos's price. even if they came down by 30 quid, i'd regard the 20 quid extra to be able to get service in a camera shop as a wise investment.

Good luck with it OP. I bought my d3100 about 18 months ago and have had a ball with it. Took some fantastic shots. You really cannot go wrong with that camera for your first.
