    Great story.
    Slightly off topic but...
    under what circumstances should you actually consider opting out? What kind of signals should you look out for that there's something really wrong and it's not just a case of digging deeper or htfu? When might it be harmful to continue?

    IMO any kind of deep chest pain/ dizziness / trouble breathing would be something I wouldn't ignore. Also sharp injury type pain in legs that gets worse is't really what glycogen depletion feels like etc...

    2 years i did Dublin, had a few issues non running related in the backround.

    After 4 miles of the Dublin marathon i was struggling to keep 9 min miles, after 8 miles i was struggling to keep 10 min miles. I pulled out a half, something was wrong, felt like crying, total depressed by it but god knows what damage i would of done if i kept going.

    9 min miles or 10 min miles was well out of sorts for me. You know when to quit, your body will tell you, just listen to it.

    Be careful when reading stories about it being hard for the last few miles, dig in, etc....
    Pacing a marathon correctly, after the correct training would mean that the last few miles would not be 'hard', and any further digging in, should be calculated self motivation digs to push you to finish in a faster time.

    For my first marathon, when the going got tough, I thought it was 'just the end being hard', told myself to keep pushing, I'll be fine etc....turns out I wasn't fine, with two miles to go, I dropped at a water station, took me a while to come around (although I wasnt unconsious), ended up walking/staggering to the finish line after about 10-15mins on the deck. Sometimes, it's good to ease off and in my case I obviously should have! I probably wasnt prepared for the time I was aiming for, but temperatures on the day were also very high!
