    Hi Guys,
I know this is a dedicated car forum, but perhaps someone on here could advice me :
I'm considering buying a van (new) - the following are my options The new Ford Custom, VW Transporter or Mercedes Vito.
My annual milage is 18,000 approx, van will be empty 75% of the time, will be towing horse box etc. at weekends, cannot afford having a car and say a second hand 4x4 paying tax, insurance, DOE, NCT, maintainence etc. on two vehicles. Will not be carrying passengers.
The 3 things I'm concerned about is 1. Running costs, mpg etc.
    2. Reliability, 3. Depreciation
I know the VW is tried and tested but the Ford Custom is all new and don't seem to be selling that well.
I'd welcome any feedback, thanks in advance.

    M.

Would a car van suit your needs ? New focus vans are nice. They also have a Kuga van which is a bit bigger.

Seeing as though you only need it to be a van 25% of the time at least they will be comfortable for the other 75%.

    Hi Strituck,

Unfortunately the likes of the Foucs, VW Caddy, Berlingo, Partener etc. lack the required power, weight etc. to pull a fully loaded horse box, it has to be a 2.2 L. van or 4x4

You could always downgrade to a pony :)

Best of luck with the search.

I'd say the VW Transporter 4motion, not cheap though.

Why does it have to be new? Particularly if deprecation is a concern. Save your money for extra repairs and upkeep that come with owning a van. The pre facelift T5 4 motion uses the 2.5 PD unit. If you go new your stuck with the 2.0 common rail, thanks to new Euro emmisions regs i believe. There is also the option of a crewcab but I've never seen a crewcab 4 motion. Rare enough I'd say.

It could be new for tax/leasing reasons.

If you are looking at new vans, price up the Vivaro/Trafic/Primastar. I know the Opel version is being replaced next year, and they are coming out very cheap at the moment. Ignore the list prices, and see what dealers will do on each version.

Bit long in the tooth at this stage, but that means that most of the issues have been ironed out. Depreciation will be fairly low if you buy at the right price. No idea of MPG in relation to the VW/Ford.
