Dentist and medical card

Okay, here's the situation: I'm probably going to need all of my teeth out and I'm planning on getting an over-denture abroad.

Would it be possible to get my teeth pulled on my medical card?

Least week, I visited my local heath board over getting my eyes tested on my medical card and they told me to post a form I got from Vision Express and the health board will get back to me in 6 weeks.

Will I have to go to my health board again over getting my teeth done on the medical card? Will this also take me 6 weeks or whatever?

Yes you can have extractions on the medical card. You can get dentures on the medical card also. Somebody is going to ask the obvious question.

What's the obvious question? I was hoping to get an over-denture which is a type of tooth implant. I was planning to get it done in India which is a hell of a lot cheaper than Ireland would be and the dentist is trustworthy.

The reason why I selected India is because I'm planning to go there for cosmetic surgery anyway and the flights / accommodation / food etc... are very cheap.

    What's the obvious question?
I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "How can someone that can afford to go to India for cosmetic surgery have a medical card?"

Simple. I'm on temporary disability, not on the dole. I'm hoping to be off it in a few months and that's when I'll fly abroad.

Well, I rang the health board and they said it's one extraction and three fillings per calender year.

2 fillings and as many extractions as you need afaik.

Don't bother with the health board, just find a dentist who accepts the medical card.

yup the above is correct. I asked my dentist a few weeks ago. needed 3 fillings and will need at least 1 extraction eventually.

Dentists normally say 1 extraction & 3 fillings.
They won't do any more than that.
If you find one that says he/she will extract them all, go for it as that is not the norm

Eeeer - no they don't!
You certainly wont get more than 2 fillings covered, except under certain clinical necessities, usual medical or health grounds. These are the discretion not of the dentist but your local HSE approving principal who will approve / decline as required.

Extractions are unlimited, as are prescriptions.

I changed my dentist as thats what I was quoted, I needed 3 extractions & was told I couldn't get it.?
Do some dentists make up their own rules & just say, like it lump it?

I think dentists have trouble getting money from the HSE even for things that are covered

Yep, pretty much, I deal with paperwork related to it ! Once thr dentist specifies why it is needed, along with the tooth number, it is covered.

Its any extraction, any prescription and 2 filling per calendar year. Welcome to the 1950's public dental service, dentures for all the people of ireland. :(

Yes, unfortunately experience says its a topic that will go south extremely quickly.

Also ad hoc conversation is not good for research, do a survey with pointed questions.

Agree with heli 100%. Asking one group to comment on another subsidised group will end badly and will in no way be representative of the many nuanced situations out there and is bound to be massively insulting to somebody. It's not going to happen.

essentially unplanned conversation in this instance.

Basically as Fitzgeme alluded to, if you just stick up a question like the one you'll get answered you'll get everyone who doesnt have a medical card moaning about the people that do calling them lazy, wasters etc

Where as you'll have the people who have medical cards say, well i worked for X years and was made redundant etc I'm not a waster.

IF you want proper feedback you need a survey, you need specific questions where responses and essentially peoples feelings on the issue can be measured, you will not get that on a message board.

Thats a bit unfair to the 1950s. They did have the PRSI dental scheme then.
