Im wanting to know are these hidden cameras any good. We have a very busy house witg friends/family members, kids and kids frienda in and out of the house all day. You see, recently we have noticed some money going missing along with other valuable items and where thinking of setting up a hidden camera to catch the culprit on in the act. We arent looking to buy something expensive bevause its only getting used for a few weeks. So can anyone recommend any hidden cameras, possibly one which is battery powered and would also have motion sensored night vision.

Not expensive, but small, portable, battery powered, motion sensored and with night vision. Best of luck with your search.

You would be better off asking this in one of the tech forums, you're unlikely to get a serious answer here.

Screw cameras, too expensive. What you need is a honey-trap.

All you need to do is paint anything valuable left around in red UV paint. Then when something goes missing gather everyone in a room and explain that you have identified the culprit and that they are in that very room. When people start looking around theorizing who it might be flick a switch that turns off the main lights and turns on a UV light. As the guilty party notices their hands are glowing red, and others begin to pay attention, exclaim that they have been caught red-handed.

I got one for outside my front door a few years ago, motion sensor, decent night recording as light would come on when triggered, cost relatively little (apx 30 euro iirc) only trouble is you might have difficulty camouflaging an outdoor lantern in your living room.

You might fancy yourself a bit of an 'ol Hercule Poirot, but it could all get quite ugly once you notice that your brother has red hands and your wife's blouse is covered in red handprints......

When we had a dog sh1tt1n in our front garden we used a laptop with webcam and we used a free application that only recorded when there was movement. It'll save you trawling through hours of nothingness.

Get a small cheap external webcam with a long USB cable. Configure a laptop so that it doesn't turn off when lidded down. Nobody will suspect that the lidded dwn laptop is running. Conceal the webcam in a hollowed out book or similar. Start to leave the lights on all the time and you wont have to worry about night vision

iwatchlife.com lets you tyurn your webcam into a security cam so if you have a laptop you can use that. Hidden cameras can go from really cheap to really expensive.

It's almost certainly one of your teenage children pilfering your money. More than likely to buy cheap booze and cigarettes.

That's priceless...so what did you do when you caught the culprit pooch?

why dont you set up a situation like leaving 20 euro in the kitchen in a visable enough spot with a scrunched up receipt (like as if someone pulled it out of their pocket and may not have realised there was 20 in it)... you must have an idea of who it is so when that person is due to arrive, invite them in and excuse yourself for a few mins.... leaving them alone- have the memory on your mobile phone cleared and press record.... you should get a few mins out of it.. trial and error - worth a shot

Secretly recording people (most of whom have done nothing to you) with a hidden camera is quite frankly a stupid and creepy thing to do.

Just dont leave money and valuables around if they tend to go missing. Problem solved.

print out a 20 euro note sized piece of paper, with one side of a 20 on it, and on the reverse write something to the effect of "there's a camera, give this paper back to me and I'll forgive you" and scrunch it up and leave it somewhere to be stolen ---> then don't forgive them

Aldi had a "wildlife" camera for sale for €99 with motion sensor included. I think it is infra red as well. I was going to get one as we had a problem with missing diesel from the tank.
Bought a good padlock instead :D

    How about something like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,423 ✭✭✭✭josip

That's priceless...so what did you do when you caught the culprit pooch?

2 days after we had set it up, we caught it on camera. It was a young dog we suspected, being walked by its 12 year old owner befroe they went to school, but after we went to work. The boy didn't fancy the job of cleaning up the poo, so scooted a few yards up the street when Fido was doing the biz. It seems that Fido after a few weeks had associated our front lawn as the "toilet stop".

I called around to the neighbours house and pleasantly asked them to make sure that when their son was walking the dog in the morning, not to let it poo on our lawn. I was expecting the "how do you know it's our dog" response, most people would be defensive. So I said "We've recorded it on camera, would you like to see the photos?" My offer was declined, apologies were mumbled and no more dog poo.

I suspect the OP might have other ulterior motives for needing a hidden camera.

That would be fine if we were talking about the workplace or a hostel but in your own home you should be able to leave whatever you want wherever you want.

But the OP said it was a busy place. Its not a perfect world full of perfect people, if you leave money around where there are people coming and going then there is a high chance it'll go missing. Even in your own home.

If you want your money to be safe you keep it safe. If it was taken from a bedroom locker then fair enough but if its going walkabout from the mantelpiece then its the OP's own fault and secretly recording everyone is just creepy and stupid. I've heard this "my money is gone" story plenty, never happened to me though because I never leave money lying about.

Yes, and if there's someone untrustworthy in the family circle, much better to find out who it is rather than to be always defensive. It could be someone funding a drink/smokes/drug habit and if that someone was one of your own kids, you'd rather find out about it than drive them elsewhere.
