    Hello all.

Think this is the first time i've posted in motors. Post a bit in motorbikes!

Anyways. I'm looking to replace my pajero due to irish government making this no country for large engines. its a 3.2 and returns the same fuel economy of a 747

    So my requirements

    1) has to be a mid sized car van
    2) id prefer a car van over the likes of a caddy
    3) the more mpg the better i do 3-400 miles a week.
    4) has to be able to tow a small twin axle trailer.
    5) the newer the better....so no mk2 golf vans! :P
    6) budget around 7-8k mark
    7) ill never own another french car.

I've been looking at the focus 1.6 or 1.8 vans and the auris 1.4d4d

    any comments?

    also...excitement isnt really a factor here...its a daily workhorse im after..ive a z750 to keep me entertained!

    thoughts?

A lot of modern diesels are more trouble than they're worth in fuel savings. , but how about a Golf ?

Between me and my dad we've owned most of the different types of car vans over the years and I currently have a mk2 focus 1.6tdci van.

Anyway I would recommend you to get
Astra van 1.7cdti not 1.3cdti if you want to pull a trailer
Auris van 1.4d4d seem like a really good reliable van.
Golf van 1.9 tdi mk5 more expensive but again a very good van.
All 3 would fall into your budget.

i've the auris 1.4 van and love it. grand van. easy on fuel and never a days bother (touch wood).

or the focus, i'd go with the 1.8 as i hear the 1.6 has issues, not saying the 1.8 can be all roses, but i've heard more hardship from 1.6

How do you find the auris for comfort? i know its a car van and now a comfort spec car now :P

A mk5 golf van would be a good bet. That 1.9 was the last of the really reliable tdi lumps. Finding one that hasn't been ragged wont be the easiest mind you.

Just so you know the cost of the doe on car derived vans has just doubled to basically 100 euro a year since the rsa have taken it over. With your budget you might be better off to go for a diesel hatchback If you can get on on the new tax system it will be cheaper to tax, a lot more choice and not much difference in loading space with the seats folded down.

Things have definitely tightened up alright. Me and one other passed about 7 failed its a lot stricter with the new system . In saying all that if you have a good well maintained van it will pass.

I'd say there are a huge amount of vans out there going off the road with a stricter doe and the new tax system meaning you can't get out of paying back tax between tests as easily as it used to be

Also all the tests are now back dated so if a test on a van is out 6 months then if it passes doe it will only get a 6 month test.

It hasn't doubled. It has gone up from €70.86 ex VAT to €94.86 ex VAT.

You do have a point regarding going the private car route rather than commercial. This may not suit the OP though depending on whether or not they are VAT registered.

Sorry was going off memory from last time I tested a van thought it was closer to 50 than that

seeing as how engine size and government were mentioned in the OP I'd guess it's for private use ;-)

    Kia Ceed van:

OP, unless you are VAT registered you may have to tax it privately the same as a passenger car.

    Cheers for the replies all.

I'm aware of the tax issues lads. I've been driving commercials a long time

this is what the 1.4 D4D appeals to me the tax on a 1.4 D4D should be 280 if im correct. so less than commerical tax.

Yeah , but you'll pay such a high premium to get one it'll cancel out any potential tax savings, and they have been known to,give trouble.

Private Tax on commercials is based on engine size, so a 1.4D4d would be €385. 1.6d would be €514

We've a good few on fleet that haven't given any issues, but I know someone working in a company with a large fleet of Auris vans and they've had loads of issues with numerous vehicles.

    +1 for the Focus Van.

Had one for a good while. Comfortable and reliable. I had the 1.6 tdi which was powerful enough although I did not have any weight in the back.

Parts are cheap too and loads of focusessesss in breakers yards if you ever need second hand parts.

Why limit to a car van, most modern small vans seem to feel like a car inside. And with a solid bulkhead, heating etc wouldn't be a problem?

I'd be sort of weary going from a 3.2 Pajero to a 1.4 Auris for towing a twin axle trailer, that's a huge step back in power and torque. But I'm sure you know what you're looking for!

I dont actually tow that much. maybe 3-4 times a year. Lawnmowers for service. Bush cuttings for disposal etc. I wouldnt be towing a trailer loaded with blocks or anything!

I've spotted a nice 1.9 tdi with low mileage as well. The auris i was looking at has sold.

Auris is a grand little van. Have one myself, stuck a solid mesh bulkhead in her. Great little van, only thing i hate is the digital fuel clock. To this day i find it hard to judge. Can't beat the auld handle!!!

The price mightn't have doubled but it did increase significantly. Having to pay €100+ is a bit ridiculous Imo.

A Caddy would probably do the job too.
