Carrying Ashes on an aircraft

    Hi there,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it seemed like a good start.

My Father will soon be flying on a Ryanair flight, and bringing my Mother's Ashes with him.

He'd like to put her Ashes into his suitcase and then into the baggage hold, i.e. not as part of his carry-on luggage.

I can find Ryanair's policy that says that Ashes may be carried as carry-on luggage providing you have the Death Cert & Cremation Cert. However, it doesn't say whether they're allowed in the hold or not.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks...

    J.

    Hi Jason,
I would have to suggest you contact the airline in question directly to get correct, first hand information.

Sorry for your loss :( Hopefully they are sensitive to your needs,

    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply...

We got in touch with Ryanair, and putting them in the hold with checked in baggage is fine, but you still need the Death Certificate and Cremation Certificate.

    Thanks...

    J.

You'll need to have those certs.

I know somebody who brought ashes back as hand luggage on an international flight. Oddly, they didn't xray the box so there's a hole in security if there ever was one. Plus it goes to show you, you never know what's in the bag that you've just rammed yours up against in the overhead locker! :P
