Grand Scenic - Ball Joints

    Hi guys,
Just put our Renault Grand Scenic (2006) through the NCT, and it failed on "worn ball joints" on both sides of the front suspension. Just wondering how big a deal this is. Roughly what would I expect to pay to get the two of these replaced?
My father in law is pretty decent at car mechanics, is it something I could take on with him?

    Thanks

Cheap and easily to replace so really not worth the hassle messing around with. Garage will have it sorted in no time.
Safety critical items so very worthwhile getting them done.

That would be useful for detaching the track rod end from the hub but it's useless on the ball joint itself.

The ball joints on the Megane/Scenic are not the traditional type which passes through a hole in the hub and bolted from above.
The spigot of the ball joint fits into jaws in the hub, and clamped by tightening a bolt though the side. When removing the ball joint you might need to spread the jaws all little by tapping a tapered punch between the jaws.

The video here shows how to remove the ball joint from the wishbone, but not the prep work in removing the hub.

Yeah, your FIL should be able to fix this.
    This page describes the procedure.

I phoned a garage about it and he wasn't sure with my model car (Grand Scenic mark 2) if it was just a ball joint would need replacing - or the whole wishbone. Guessing the whole wishbone would be more expensive. Any ideas?

    thanks

had this issue on a peugeot 206 and the ball joints were built in to the wishbone so it was new front wishbones to cure the problem, peugeot like renault being french and AFAIK are in sone way linked by ownership means you could end up having to do the same and change the wishbones in your renaulr,i am in no way mechanically minded so i could be wrong but i'm going on my own experiences, check micksgarage.com and it will tell you if you can get balljoints seperately for your car

They are a separate part, pressed into the wishbone, they have small splines on the side that grip the wishbone.
Very cheap though Mister-auto list Lemforder ones for less than 20ea!

Theres no link with peugeot and renault. Peugeot and citroen are the same company.

The balljoints can be changed using the method in the video with the sockets. You need a 36 and a 34 socket though from memory. Not everyone will have them so by the time you go buy them your probably best off letting a garage do it for the price of an hours labour.

Ypu can buy the wishbones with the ball joints in them for about 80 quid iirc if you do want to go that way.
