I have posted away my renewal form for my second learners permit,i have'nt been driving for a few months but i'm buying a car tomorrow.it says on the cork co council website that it might take up to 5 weeks for the applications to be processed, just wondering as you need your license number to get insured if I can use my old license number or do I have to wait for my new license to arrive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you currently do not hold a valid licence you cannot legally drive Im afraid.

Up to 5 weeks doesn't mean it will take the full 5 weeks, it could be quicker.
If your old permit is still within it's expiry date, you might be able to get insured.
Most likely though, the insurers may insist on seeing the renewed permit.

You can use the old number

Insurance policy wording usually includes something like "holds, or has held" the license.

The problem that you will face is that you may be asked to send in a copy of your license within 28 days of taking out the policy; something you may not be able to do.

Did the tax office in Cork not used to issue liceneses on the spot? Or was that only with the old licenses?

OP ring the insurance co and tell them that you are waiting for your licence. As long as you are not banned they wont mind. This happened me before. I had sent away for the licence while getting my insurance renewed and the application got lost in the post.

Once I told the insurance co that I will have in in a week or two they said send on a copy when you get it and we were all happy out.
