Brother is looking for a car,
    Recommendations based on this criteria??

Does over 30k miles yearly so must be Diesel no bigger then 2lt
Must have 4/5 doors incl Iso fixing in the back seat.
    Saloon or Hatchback
    No Reno/Peugoet/Audi
    Budget 5k max

Currently looking at Mondeo's & Avensis from 04 onwards...
but anything else worth considering??? Naturally he wants the best car he can get for them money. Realiabilty is number 1. Hear alot of Passat horror stories hence not looking at them.

    Why no Audi's?

I have an 02 A4 1.9 TDI and it is by far the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Fully service history since new, 130k miles and still feels solid & tight .... It feels like it could do another 130k without breaking a sweat.

Not selling it, definitely recmmend it though (if you can find a good one, which'll be hard I'd say)

Golf Tdi. JGF has one. 1.9. Gets great mileage with the diesel.

For that budget, I have to go +2 on Mondeo. They're tanks, and will go forever. I would say, however, to buy from reputable dealer, and try to get as much service history as you can. I bought one privately, and it came down the country from Monaghan. Alls I say is that perhaps, the previous owners were not too particular about where they got their diesel from, because I had to get the 4 injectors done (at a cost of 800e), fuel pump replaced, and when we dropped the tank, we pulled about 6inches of sludge from it.

Other than that, the 2l Tdci has great umph and will go forever, once looked after occasionally.

actually on that note about the audi's. I had an A4 before the 3 series. it was 1997 and a tank. was very close to buying another one after. i rang an audi garage bcause i had heard of problems. he said the 1.9's are tanks but that the 2.0's are disasters. just worth noting!

I love mine, but I don't think I've seen any other car (bar alfas) that tend to have as many common issues.

Not cars to buy without doing plenty of research first

My other brother has one(A4) & he's had to spend a fortune on maintaining it (02, 140k). Audi parts seem to be expensive so he just doesn't want to get one.

Well, I suppose it all comes down to who has owned it before you and how well it has been maintained.

If he is ruling Audi's out , he may aswell scrap the idea of Volkswagens and Skodas as well because mechanically they are all pretty much identical

Sorry to slightly highjack the thread but how do u find the 320d in the frost/snow. Having driven 316 but not in particularly bad weather found it a bit "dancy" but youd get used to it.
