€500 to respray car door?

    Hi

My friend scratched the side door of my car when parking his car next to mine, its nothing major & I wouldnt even have noticed it myself unless i went looking for it. My friend was nice enough to knock in & tell me he had clipped the side of my car & that if i got a qoute on it, he would have no problem paying for it. I went off to my local garage where i always go when i have car trouble this morning & got qouted €500 for doors/panels. apparently they would need to respray the whole door/panels. If i damaged it myself I wouldnt pay it, I almost feel bad knocking into my friend later & telling him how much it will cost. At the same time Its a brand new 2013 Car & ideally i would like to keep it in perfect condition.

Is €500 a bit steep to respray a door/panels As I said the damage to the paint work isnt that bad, just a little scrape but when you do see it you wish it wasnt there. Should i feel bad telling my mate how much it will cost?

    Thanks

Get another quote, that sounds very expensive!

For a 1 panel repair I would have expected 300ish

Maybe let him do a bit of leg work and see if he can get a better quote. Its up to you really who you get it repaired with, but that does sound expensive. Is it a main dealer by any chance?

I wouldn't call that overly expensive, maybe a touch on the high side.
The way Tot day you can hardly see it, could it be fairly well polished out with effort?

No its not the main dealer, its a garage called Ace Motors, they would be a reputable garage & specialise in respray & paint work etc..i was a bit shocked by the qoute, id like the car fixed but at the same time i dont want to be ripping people off & making him pay over the odds. Although i wouldnt want some cowboy fixing it on the cheap either

Id post up a picture but im not the most technically gifted person in the world..its not a big scratch, but it is scratched down to the metal when u look at it, you can put your finger nail into it

Ah right no hope so, if they are a good place with great finish then that's an Ok price.
Some cheaper places can reach a finish good enough and it would stand out like mad on a new car.

I know when I got a door done, they guy did the whole side of the car as there would have been a colour mismatch. Granted, my car was about 3 years old at the time, but perhaps its the same case here. 500 snots doesn't sound too bad to me if its good finish

To be clear, my damage spread over 2 doors so your man did the quarter panels so everything matched

I would have imagined around the 300 mark

I was nearly going to have a go at it myself with one of those repair kits you cam get in Halfords,id say it would end up like the car in Fr.Ted though, id destroy the whole thing. Im dreading knocking in to this lad later. €500 is a lot of money, could be better spent on something like the mortgage or a bill but ive no problem with him paying me back in instalments or whenever he has it.. Il see what he says anyway

If it's Ace Autobody, they are a bit expensive, but the quality is great. I think they mainly work for insurance companies now rather than walk in trade.

Have you tried a rubbing compound on the scratch, wont get rid of it, but might conceal it a bit.

Sorry i should mentioned that he said he would have to match the panels, Now that you say it maybe thats what he meant. its €500 to spray the panels as well as the door so it all matches up..which in that case sounds a reasonable price

Could you post a picture of the damage? If it's not too bad, you could possibly get it polished out by a detailer for c. €100 instead of getting it resprayed.

+1 I'd have expected 250/300 per panel as the price for top-class work. I believe the garage might be farming it out with extra margin on the work.

They can't just so the door though as it will stand out horribly. They must do more than the door so that it won't catch your attention so vividly.

Paint missing and down to bare metal, not a hope of polishing out.... there's nothing to polish out!

    Sure, but it depends.

The newer the car the less likely it is that a newly sprayed panel will stand out like a sore thumb. On a 2013 non-metallic / non-pearl paint job there's a high probability it'll work fine.

I forgot about the age actually you're right.
Regarding an earlier post, please god don't go near a touch up kit, you can never get a good finish at all :)

The OP never said what type of paint it is.

Its silver metalic paint..its scratched down to the metal as you can see black/metal colour in the scratch. Anyway i found a cheaper place, gave me a qoute of €420, i knocked into my mate, didnt even question the price. Hes a good honest guy & ive known him for years. Told me he would pay up when the job is completed

Just check to crowds quality before running to them, when it's €80 in the difference.
Your very lucky to have such a sound neighbour, plenty of stories here weekly of a car being reversed into in an estate and nobody owning up!

I agree with the other poster ask to see some of their previous work. You've a new car and a half arsed respray will devalue it if you plan on selling in the next few years. When I bought my current car I was told on the inspection that a door was resprayed, the garage agreed, I've the car 2 years and still can't see anything different between the door and the rest of the car. The person checking out the car noticed it straight away, they spent years painting cars.

I hope you're neighbour is as nice when they get the bill.

Sounds expensive, I have a quote if 150 to respray my bonnet + about 24 euro for the paint. The lad does very good work too he is no cowboy.

I had insurance work done by ace autonomy. It had to be redone twice.

my car is old, 2006, Corolla and I have a few scratches. One of them is getting a bit rusty (looks like it was a stone hit the bonnet) and I'd like to have it repaired. There are a few other scratches, I park in a v large, poorly-surfaced car park at work and both wing mirrors have been clipped at various stages. I want to change it in the new year and thought I'd have it cleaned up. Also saw a slight bump on my rear bumper, looks like someone reversed into me so thought I'd sort that too, could anyone recommend someone reasonable who'd do a good job. thanks

It's probably not worth it. A good job will be expensive if they are doing the whole panel, which sounds like what we're talking here.
