Universal Social Charge Query

    Hi,

I have had a look at the revenue site but seem to be getting more confused

I am just trying to calculate my salary to check against the payslip.

The USC is charged against the gross salary if I am correct?
So does this mean that the monthly Health BIK is included in my gross for calculating the USC?

Also what about my pension contribution and then what my employer matches for my pension contribution is that also taken into account when calculating USC?

    Thanks :)

    Hello,

Yes, basically everything is taken in to account when calculating the USC

Gross + BIK + Employers contribution to Pension (PRSA pension).
All added together to give you your gross for USC.

Unlike when calculating PAYE your pension contribution is not deducted from the gross first.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for your reply.

I just had a look at my payslip again and did more calculations.

It seems in calculating the USC, my employers are taking into account monthly salary with health BIK but are not taking the pension contribution into account when calculating it.

    Is this wrong then?

If your employer is contributing to your PRSA then this contribution is treated as BIK and is subject to USC.

See page 22 of the booklet at this link: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/usc/universal-social-charge-faqs.pdf

Note that if the contribution is not to your PRSA but to a 'more general' Approved Retirement Benefit Scheme (not sure but I think that's one which is generally available to all employees rather than just you- which is what your PRSA is like) then such contributions are NOT treated as BIK income and are not subject to USC- pg 16 of the same booklet has that info.

did you complete a form 12a?

you probably wont get it back this year but if you register for Payeanytime online - make sure your tax credits are correct ( it propts you though what are mostlikely available to you) and you can request a balancing statement in the new year which wiill deal with any refund
