"Hungry Muslim-Eating Dogs" would've been a better headline.

Why did you ignore this bit OP?
“We issued a religious edict allowing people to eat dog and cat meat. Not because it is religiously permitted, but because it is a reflection of the reality we are suffering”

    So...just like all religion then.

In reality these guys should be applauded. They've effectively said, "Forget what the koran says, if you're dying with hunger, do what you have to do". Which is a rare moment of compassion and sense that you don't normally see in religious fundamentalism.

So much for empathy for humanity... Wtf has the Koran gotta do with people who are so hungry they will eat anything.

Reminds me of the lack of empathy people had a few years ago with a race and religion of people who were so persecuted a good few million of them died, while other who were in privelidge made jokes and stupid comments about their religion and thought they were smart

What's wrong with eating dogs? Is it that its starving individuals looking for an adequate source of protein? Or is it because they happen to be Muslim? Hopefully, this thread isn't an attempt to bash people of a particular religion.

Because it wouldn't fit in well with his bigotry comment.

You know Indians think were mad for eating cows.

True that. I'd like to think that the dog was eating the infection off of his owner. The guy plans to keep the dog. Here in the States, I'm fairly certain that the dog would be put down.

Hungry religious people would rather starve to death than disobey the good book, or kill others who disobey the good book, so this seems to be a practical solution to a dilemma that has no real good outcome. Putting dogs and other animals on the "permitted" list is better than people starving to death.

I ate dog a few years ago.
Was in a sort of stew with veg and the like..
To be honest it was fine, bit chewy but manageable..

I can't see what the fuss is about..

Sometimes it makes sense to relax the rules a little, perhaps they see a higher morality at play here. Like that time the RCC allowed polygamy in Paraguay.

No fuss really, just seems to be an excuse to have a pop at Muslims. Muslims whose country has been torn to shreds and who are starving. Classy.

Or when the GAA allowed Sokker ar Croke Park although Sean Kelly has recently claimed that many elements within the GAA still havent forgiven him.

Civil wars are always terrible. The Irish Civil War being no different. Events like Ballyseedy prove we are no better or worse than anyone else.

You jumped to a conclusion without even knowing the facts of this particular religion.....at least search the web for a proper correct answer.

Apparently God in Islam permits and allows Muslims to eat any meat (including pork, dogs, cats....) if there are no other meats available and if their life is in danger.

So why was a fatwa issued to permit the eating of dog?
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-24532793
A group of Syrian clerics have issued a ruling - or fatwa - allowing people living in besieged suburbs of Damascus to eat meat that is normally forbidden.
In a video, the Muslim clerics said people could eat cats, dogs and donkeys to stave off hunger.
The fatwa comes amid reports of starvation in the besieged, rebel-held Damascus suburb of Muadhamiya.
Aid agencies have urged the government to allow humanitarian supplies to the area, where many residents are trapped.
Hundreds of civilians, some carried on stretchers, were able to flee Muadhamiya at the weekend following a temporary ceasefire.
'Absurd situation' In a message to coincide with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha - normally a time for celebration and feasting - the religious leaders authorised those left in the Ghouta agricultural belt around Damascus to eat animals usually considered unfit for human consumption in Islam.

Some fantastic, pithy contributions to the thread thus far from the OP and a devastating body blow to the solar plexus of religion.

I'm afraid to nod off here on the couch lest I miss any more.

I wonder if, in a couple of hundred years, will the descendents of those who didn't eat the dog look down their noses at the descendents of those that did and refer to them as the ones 'who took the dog'.

does the dog have to be slaughtered halal style?

"Starving people forced to eat dogs" surely would have been a better title?

I ate dog once in Hong Kong. It was only ok. Did it for the experience but was too conscious of it to enjoy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,749 ✭✭✭✭wes

So why was a fatwa issued to permit the eating of dog?

To let people who maybe didn't know about previous edicts know that it was ok.

When, I was a kid, we were told, that in situations, were there was no Halaal meat available, and people were hungry, it was ok to eat it, and that various other Religious edicts could be ignored if it meant saving your life. There is technically no need for a Fatwa for situations like this, but sure why not make one, if it means that some folks who otherwise might have gone hungry won't now.

Anyway, going to go donate some money for Syria, after seeing how bad things are.

Also, the op is pretty nasty imho. Using the suffering of people, to have a go at them. Out of order imho.

So why was a fatwa issued to permit the eating of dog?

Because some people will stick to Halal rules even when starving.
Muslims are allowed to break Halal rules when no other food is available.

The Clerics are just making it "official" so that people don't starve needlessly.

What ever happened to the days when both enemy's meet on an open battle feild limiting the civilian population to the war, no into days warfare it's an easy way of causing suffering is by going after the civilians of your enemy
