I hope that some of you fashionistas can help me out here. I'm going on a shopping trip to NY in a couple of weeks with my 2 daughters aged 18 and 13. I've been a few times so am familiar with the usual teenage shops like A&F, Hollister etc but the older girl has just started college and is looking for more "grown up" clothes. She needs a whole new wardrobe really and I have no idea which shops to take her to. She has a reasonable (not excessive) budget and I'd appreciate any advice please.

I'd head out to jersey gardens for a day you get the bus from the port authority you can look up online all the shops that are there.. You get really good deals out there and don't pay tax and they have all the shops..

Thanks Harpy. I've been to JG but again only went to A&F and the likes. Any suggestions as to what shops are good there.

Definitely hit up Urban Outfitters, much cheaper than over here, same goes for American Apparel. Anthropologie and J. Crew are really cool but might be a bit expensive.

Uniqlo is deadly, great for basics and they have more "fashion" stuff too.

Victoria's Secret do clothes, not just underwear. They have some cool stuff in their Pink range.

Armani Exchange might be a little old for her, but they do nice jeans/jeggings. From what I remember they're similar to Guess but a bit better priced.

You'll find the old favourites too, Old Navy, GAP, H&M, Zara

If she's into more individual/vintage/thrift style, you can try Buffalo Exchange http://www.buffaloexchange.com/location-details/newyorkcity#NY2 and Beacon's Closet http://www.beaconscloset.com/

Macy's is a bit like Debenhams in that they have their own labels in there, as well as brands. Surprisingly, Madonna's "Material Girl" range had some pretty cute stuff when I was there!

Journeys and Discount Shoe Warehouse are both great for shoes. Journeys would be like Schuh, and DSW (Union Sq) has loads of discounted brands like Rocket Dog, Nike, UGG, Vans etc.

If you really want to treat them I would suggest getting mani-pedis ($20 for both in most salons), and maybe book your 18 year old into Sephora or MAC for a make up lesson/make over? Many make up brands are much cheaper and it would be a cool surprise for her!

I have to make my burger recommendation too :p I tell everyone going to NY to go to this place!! http://stmarksburger.com/

This thread is fairly old now, but worth a look anyway! http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055314670

Hi Twee. Thanks so much for that info. Will definitely research all those before I go. Great idea too about the make up lesson. Might take them to the Mac shop on Times Square - I found that a real eye opener when I was last there. Can't wait to try the burger too :pac:

There's also MAC stores at 689 Fifth Avenue and 353 Bleecker St if you're in those areas. I found them to be a bit quieter than Times Sq, more chance for individual attention. I did my J1 in NY and was in all the MAC stores at one stage or another :P

Bleecker St also has the Book Marc shop. It's a Marc Jacobs book and stationery shop. Such cute notebooks, pens, small accessories/jewelry for good prices.

You should dedicate a couple if hours to the massive Century 21 opposite ground zero too! It's amazing, i have got some fantastic bargains in there clothes shoes handbags sunglasses just about everything, it never lets me down. But it is vast! I recommended eating before you go in and take it section by section, a divide and conquer kind if strategy! Well worth all the effort!

Personally id stay away from outlets like Woodbury common.
Head down to Soho full of boutique style stores European&american.
    You won't go wrong.

Thanks to everyone who replied - some great ideas there. She's busy looking at all the websites as we speak. I guess I'll be broke when I get back:)

Well, our trip is over and we came back laden with goods - heavy bags and a light wallet. We found great bargains in Jersey Gardens and the likes. Old Navy was great as was century 21. For anyone interested in make up the new ELF store on Broadway is fab, both of my daughters spent a lot there but got great value. I bought a great pair of heeled Dr. Martens for myself too and they worked out much cheaper than here. One thing to watch - if you shop in Aeropostale, they seem to be adding tax to every bill (this happened to my younger daughter on three occasions when she was buying clothes which are tax free) and when I questioned it I was told that some items are taxable. When I asked them to tell me which items the tax was immediately removed from the bill and I was informed that it was a "glitch". Thanks to everyone who made recommendations.
