Chimney lining for insert/free standing stove

    Hi,

we currently have a small free standing stove in front of our fireplace, with the pipe coming out of the back and up into the chimney, just about an arms reach up over the stove. (2 storey semi)

The house is about 6 years old, and not lined. At the moment when we open the door of the stove, to put fuel in, it smokes quite alot, so i think it's because the up-draft is not strong enough to pull the smoke up etc.
Also after getting it swept recently, the guy got alot of tar out of the chimney, due to the smoke cooling and not going up the chimney properly.

some people have said we need it lined, others said there is no need, once it's connected up to the chimney properly. At this stage not sure what to do ??

we were doing a few up-grade jobs on the house, and we were thinking of putting in a new fireplace anyway, and getting the stove connected up properly, or else changing it completely for an insert, like a Henley Apollo.

If we got it lined now for the existing stand alone stove, would be be easy to connect up to an insert in a few months when we could afford the insert. as far as i know the stove we have and the insert have the same size flue diameter

    hope that makes sense ?
