Every time I see a thread relating to BMWs an inordinate amount of time seems to be spent discussing the specific engine in it (E60 E90 etc) compared to any other make but the various sale ads don't seem as interested in that particular bit of info. Can anyone explain to me on a 2010 2.0 520 SE Diesel Tourer what the potential options would be, what the difference are (is it as simple as the CC capacity?) and what the ideal one should be...

yeah that engine would have made up the vast majority of 5 series sales of that year, be aware of the timing chain issue, I believe this issue was rectified in 2010 or 2011. What you would be advised to get would majorly depend on mileage. Even if you want a petrol F10 (there would be very few, if non) available... So just did a check, 19 2010 + 2011 F'10's available, all 2 litre diesels! the Engines with BMW are debated to death because A) they may suffer from faults or B) those who reckon why bother with anything other a 6 pot petrol... You will no doubt hear how "underpowered" some of them are, these "underpowered" bmw's will still be a lot quicker than your run of the mill makes, take everything with a pinch of salt!

On here you have a lot of enthusiasts though, 99% of adverts will not list the engine code.
The 2 litre diesel of that era is the dangerous one I'm nearly sure, with the timing chain and crank replacement jobbie. Find one with the new improved crank fitted and chain done and you should be ok. Or the newer rectified engine.

Just on another note, E60 and E90 are chassis models, if you see an E its a chassis (Or an F even).
M's and N's are the only engine numbers as far as I remember..

An unpowered BMW will be as slow as any other unpowered car. Just BMW don't offer as low underpowered cars as most manufacturers offer Irish buyers.

It's a hard one to get the head around :)

There's more than you think I bet too, here's a link if your anyway interested.....http://www.bmwism.com/bmw_e_m_symbols.htm

(You won't be properly accepted until you can say such an E is a lovely car, rather than naming out the model number :))

    And lately we're starting the F's :)

Just remember that the 2l diesels are the problmatic ones, fixed as said previously I think in 2011. So a newer one without fault or an older one with fixed fault or price corrected to fix it etc.

Being more of a BMW man I'm going to say get at least a 525d, 6 cylinders or none at all :D
