1.6 v 1.9 Diesel Passat

    Hi,

    I am considering a 2012 1.6 Diesel Passat. I currently 2007 1.9 Diesel Passat.

Can anyone tell me if there really is much of a power difference between these two cars. 1.6 Passat has a BHP of 105 and I have no idea what the 1.9 is.

I know how to drive these cars but know nothing about BHP or such things.

I do A LOT of country driving. Power is important to me, not for speeding but for availability of power if I need it (over-taking tractors on minor roads). I also need to draw a small trailer every now & again.

The car I am considering is not available until the weekend to see. But in the meantime, maybe someone might be able to tell me if the power drop is dramatic going from 1.9 to 1.6.

    Rgds.

Find a 2.0 litre, much better imo.

The 1.6 is quite anemic, definitely not up to the job for overtaking, it's also not as economical as it should be, I would definitely try and get a 2.0 litre.

My parents have both engines but in Octavia's. The 1.9 does feel abit more powerful the 1.6tdi is a serious amount more economical though about 10mpg in the difference. But a passat is a bigger heavier car so I think the 1.6 would be a bit underpowered for your needs specially the fact you say you do a lot of overtaking so probably better of to stick with the 2.0 tdi.

Thank you for all the replies.

I think the consensus that it would not quite have the power. I have discovered that a relative has 1.6 diesel & I am going to meet up with him over the weekend to have a test in his car.

It's a big spend & I have to buy wisely. By the time we have buggies etc in the car, plus babies & kiddies, plus the luggage, there would be a serious weight for a long journey. I'll have a test in the cousins car & see what it's like compared to my 1.9.

    Thanks again.

If you need that much space then maybe the Skoda Superb is worth looking at. A lot more of them about in 2.0 TDi in that year than Passats here which 95% of them seem to be 1.6 litre.

The 1.6 gives grand mpg pottering around. If you push it mpg goes down fast. Not a car for overtaking

Really, thank you all very much for your replies.

You have helped make my mind up. I'm going to pass on the 1.6. But the 1.9 (if it is still available) is plenty for me.

The 1.6 is quieter and smoother and the same bhp rating at 105 bhp as the older 1.9tdi however its not suited to such a large car. If you were happy with the 1.9, you will likely be happy with the 1.6 as on the move, kept in its power band, it is ok.
Parents have a 1.6 having come from a 1.9 passat and the 1.6 is woeful around slow steep country lanes where due to visibility etc, you cant keep it on turbo in 2nd gear. Its sounds odd but you have to be grabbing 1st gear at times in the 1.6 when every other car Ive known with even reasonable power would comfortably climb out of these areas in 2nd.

    Hi,

I just wanted to follow up on my post. The garage gave me a lend of the 1.6 Diesel Passat for a weekend to try it out. It was a weekend that I was going down the country on a motorway, which was a perfect testing ground for me.

After that weekend, I bought it. I have owned it for about 6 weeks now && am delighted with my purchase.

I really cannot find any difference with my previous 1.9 at all. I have all the power that I want, even when loaded with family & buggies etc. I must emphasis that I am not a hard driver and am never looking a rev counters, but just bring my car up to the speed limit & turn on cruise control and it does that perfectly for me. The only time I do looking for power would be when overtaking tractors on smaller roads, & the that power is there for me.

It is considerably more economical on diesel and my road tax has dropped to €200 per year (from €670). All in all, the 1.6 is perfect for me for the long distances and more importantly, perfect as a family car.

Thank you all again for the advice & help.

    Merry Christmas.

    D.

Yep the passat does struggle if let off the turbo down low.
You are aware that the passat is available in 2.0 tdi also and the superb is available in 1.6 tdi so the comments don't really make alot of sense

im very well aware of this,my comments were not ment to make sense lol christ its not the bible im commenting on lol,,the dealer didnt have a 2.0 passat and i said im not driving a superb with a 1.6 engine lol,,dealer said vw dont care about power only low emissions so as to keep within low tax bands thus attracting new customers and leasing companies,no good to me when the 1.6 has only 250 pounds of torque, yet a 2.0 volvo s60 has 400 pounds of torque now thats pulling power.

It has 258 pounds of torque.

    nd the 1.6 has 184

And my new van has a lowly 221 torques

The 1.6 is dangerously underpowered and incredibly frustrating to drive because it is so over-geared. Diesel torque? What diesel torque? If you're in fifth gear even at 70 km/h you might as well get out and push. A similar sized petrol would pull better at that speed in fifth.

It's fine and dandy in sixth on a motorway and will hold 120 in sixth no problem (even though it's spinning below 2,000 rpm), just don't show it anything resembling an incline though or you'll be wanting fifth gear to maintain your speed.

If the Mondeo is anything to go by, a 2.0 litre would be much, much, much quicker and will use less fuel to boot if you drive it normally.

Definitely try to get a 2ltr CR if you can.
Much more efficient & enjoyable to own.
Even the 170cr is very efficient.

(I set a PB on fuel economy today, averaged just over 60mpg in rush hour ww-> Dublin in my shed-shaped yeti).
