Thought it might be fun to have an "as it happens" chat thread for today's budget!

(my idea of "fun" these days really would terrrify a younger version of myself) :o

just going through some of it, fairly trivial, but a bottle of wine is going up 50c after last years €1 hike, its insane! the dirt tax on saving is ridiculous also!

No increases in petrol or diesel

No mention on motor tax. suppose no news is good news.:D

DIRT increase was a no brainer. Continued levels of excessive saving has to be discouraged.

From a brief glance at the journal's liveblog it seems a reasonable enough budget to me. Glad that petrol was left alone. The 50c on wine is a bit high given that they only added a 1 euro to it last year but 10c on the pint/smokes is par for the course (though I'm still convinced duties on cigarettes are already past the point of diminishing returns - I know I personally try to get most of mine from abroad at this stage).

Surprised they didn't increase motor tax on post 2008's to narrow the gap.

    From the irishtimes liveblog:
1,250 new teachers and resource teachers to be hired next year, and a new garda recruitment programme too.
I'm surprised at that. There's even mention of extra hospital staff:
Extra staff in classrooms, hospitals and in frontline policing next year, Howlin promises.

These are a 'reform dividend', made possible because of savings. But the public sector wage bill will be cut next year.
Although the wage bill is being cut at the same time.

More older teachers retiring and being replaced with yellow packs?
