Looks like from next year, all above index marks will be gone.

LK will be substituted by L.
WD will be substituted by W.
TS and TN will be substituted by T.

    EDIT:
    Sorry - my mistake.
It will only apply to trade licences.

Why is Sligo still "SO"? It's the only county beginning with "S", is it not? Similar for Roscommon and Offaly. Also, given that there are four counties beginning with "W" it would make more sense to have all those assigned a two-letter code. Where's Joe Duffy's number??!??? :D

Originally all the counties were to have two letter codes, regardless of whether or not they have unique first letters.
The single letter codes were supposed to be for cities - Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway & Waterford, but as it turned out Dublin, Cork and Galway decided to unite city and county under single letter codes.

Its amazing how convoluted they can make a simple thing such as a county reg system.

A trade licence still means it applies to the registration plate on the vehicle doesn't it?
Surely the same thing will happen to private vehicles too. It'll be even more confusing if there's TN, TS and T, all for Tipperary.
In any case shouldn't it be TY?

I don't know. I though trade licences were separate thing.

For me it's strange in the first place, that to mark 26 counties, they need 2 letter, while it could be done with one (there's 26 letters in English language).

What about the RN plates from the rednecks? This needs changing too.

That would split country into approximately 2 equal groups.
