    Hey,

Was speaking to a mate recently, we booth play bf3 on the ps3, How ever with the up and coming launch of bf 4 and ps4 I recon he should move to pc, He wasnt entirly against it his first issue was the case.... Secondly was the gpu He recons he needs a really expensive GPU to play BF4..

So my solution was to come up with a system that I recon can more then compete with the ps4 and a m-atx case that's stylish enough that it can sit in his stting room the flat screen in his sitting room and use an xbox controller or ps3?

    Item|Price
    AMD FX6300|€99.90
    ASUS M5A78|€58.28
    Asus 7870|€179.97
    Corsair CX500M|€51.95
    Cooltek Coolcube|€48.81
    WD Caviar Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€54.18
    Kingston HyperX|€73.84
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€565.96

If I've missed anything or got the wrong ram, But I'm just wondering what your opinions are of this rig?
I know its an extra €100.00 any advice or help would be great...
    cheers

PS4's probably gonna piss all over that tbh, a 7870 isn't a bad card at all, but the PS4's operating system is not going to have to go through Windows/DirectX 11 and will run more quickly. If you're gonna be playing on the PC, the main advantage is that you're not using a controller and attempting to use one against mouse + keyboard players will be pointless as you'll be absolutely brutalised by their ability to move and react more quickly and aim far more accurately.

oops, just spotted a mojor problem, you've got an ITX case and an m-ATX board, that won't fit. I'd suggest this case instead: http://www.hardwareversand.de/Mini/49191/FRACTAL+DESIGN+Geh%C3%A4use+Define+Mini.article

That said, it seems to me that if your mate wants something for the sitting room, then a PS4 is a better fit. A PC for BF4 needs to be beefy, but there's no point in trying to play it as a console game when you're going against people with a much better interface.

If you want to get the best out of bf4 you need to spend a nice chunk on a decent pc otherwise the ps4 is as good if not better. I have a pc worth about a grand at it's on a similar level to a ps4 maybe a bit below. Maybe with the boost amd mantel will give in December things might look a bit better.

If you are not solely focused on bf4 then a pc does offer better value. But it is impossible to just compare specs as how the games look depends a lot on the devs and how they work with each set up.

Bf4 is only 720p 60fps on ps4 though, the above pc will run the game at 1080p 60fps, granted with a few settings turned down but would still look better on the pc so compareing in that sense the pc would be better value.

I would say though if its for a living room on a hd telly for a friend whos not really into pc's id go with the console though

There's another thing I just thought of - if your friend doesn't know how to computer (and if he's not building this himself, then there's a good chance he doesn't), then you're going to be providing tech support till the end of time :D

Haha you just want a friend to play Bf4 with on pc :D he is not your ginnie whore.

Ps4 will be a lot smoother than this build and have the 64 players online. And probably be more fun as far as he will be concerned controller wise. Admit defeat and move on ,Or introduce him to a real military sim.. arma.2 or 3.

    Bf can't compete.

Are people being a little dramatic here? Someone said that they have a PC worth a grand and its not going to be as good as the PS4? BF4 on a PC worth a grand is going to look far better than it does on either of the new gen. The last hands on with BF4 on Xbone I saw said it was 'about 50%' better than BF3 looked on the 360. Even the dev's have talked about how consoles will never again be able to take over PC or even come close....not sure where this notion is coming from that the new consoles are some sort of incredible powerhouses. It's only running at 720p on the ps4, even that Pc in the OP would do 1080P at very good visual settings.

    Wow, RAM's getting expensive.
You can save a few euro by going with faster speed-higher timing.

You can most likely tweak it to the same performance anyway.

The handy thing about a PC is that you could throw in a better graphics card later on. A 7950 would cost an extra €50 for the cheapest one. I also don't see any of the Tahiti 7870s on a quick look, but you could save a bit on the graphics card by going with a different manufacturer.

Apowerhouses. It's only running at 720p on the ps4, even that Pc in the OP would do 1080P at very good visual settings.

Beta ran for me on high settings, with ultra textures on a Radeon 6950 (2gig)+8gig ram + I7 3770K @ 2560x1080, granted frame rate was in the 30s but it played surprisingly smooth.

A Radeon 7870 is faster than a 6950..... and would have no problem running BF4 @ 1080p smoothly with a healthy mix of high to medium settings depending on your target frame-rate.

OP: +1 to what Shiminay said: you will be his total tech support monkey biatch til the end of time if he does get a PC and is too lazy to learn.... PS4 would be the easy life!

Also consider the following case for a M-itx build

    Bit Fenix prodigy.

I think people are also forgetting about Mantle. We don't know much about it at present, but throw a 7950 in there, and it might well be able to demolish BF4.

This. Mantle is apparently going to completely remove bottlenecks between software and hardware, so this PC should demolish the PS4 in games like BF4.

I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath after seeing just how broken and badly the BF4 Beta ran with my AMD cards (2 X 6950's in Crossfire).

What kind of problems did you have, it wasn't slowdown was it?, because that was a beta issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭connorfleming

Beta's will always be buggy, the full release should be a lot more stable on most systems

Well I was just going to say that everybody had this issue including me(I have video evidence to prove it!) and Dice addressed it with a wee patch to the beta.

    I was using a HIS HD 7850 2GB btw.

I was using a 7950 and fx8350 on windows 7 running high settings with terrain on ultra and i never had one problem!

Hmm that's odd, it never happened to me after the patch, any ideas what in a gpu could trigger it?.

Someone mentioned that the fix I needed was to set bf4.exe to low CPU priority in Task Mangler and that made things infinitely better.

I stopped playing BF3 cause it always fked up with my video cards after a patch. That and PunkBuster kicking me for cheating because it didn't do it's automatic updates as it's supposed to  I'd have to get beta drivers and CAP's and all sorts of mess and when I have a stack of games that don't need their hands held to work, then they're going to get played instead. My personal experiences of Dice's track record with AMD hardware is appalling and I'm really hoping that this partnership resolves those problems because for all those issues, I thought BF3 was a brilliant game and BF4 is shaping up to be just as good and there's nothing better than squadding up with your mates and mashing your way through an enemy team.

I've heard a lot about this partnership with AMD, but I find myself wondering if it will only really shine when they implement Mantle in December

There were a few years left in BF3 to be honest. EA/DICE are milking the brand now.

Give us a new WW2 game DICE. Ignore your EA overlords.

Nothing beats the epicness of this intro.

Yeah same, I have 2 6950's and can run BF3 at 1440p ultra settings (no AA) and get a steady 60 fps. With the BF4 beta I was only getting 20-30 fps, with major spikes down to 5 fps. I had to turn it down to medium setting with no AA to get a smooth 60 fps.

Did you update to the latest beta drivers?

Yep, only helped a little. I plan on upgrading to the R9 290x so i'm not too worried.

You have? well why don't you fill us in :D ?

Haha, not quite what I meant, but I know that in the BF4 unveiling they were running on AMD powered machines, and that they are working with them for the Mantle optimisation that takes away the software bottlenecks that you get with DirectX.

I do believe that AMD paid for this partnership though.
