A reliable post 2007 diesel for 9K or less?

Well lads and lassies, I started a similar thread before but some time has passed and things have changed a bit.

The better half has decided to change her car and while she has a couple of cars in mind, your wider knowledge here would be appreciated in case there's something that would fit the bill that we haven't thought about.

She'll have a 05 Astra SXI, its a 1.6 Petrol, to trade. We're anticipating that she'll get ~€3k for it. She also has €6k cash. That leaves her budget at €9k max. She has her eye on a Passat if possible.

The car needs to be

-Diesel (She drives a 70 mile round journey each day)
-2007 or newer
-Reasonably "sturdy", she'd like something she feels safe in
-Not a Peugeot (No disrespect anyone, she's just not a fan )
-Not an estate
-Under 9 grand

Motor tax isn't a huge issue but we'd like to keep it under 2L., economy is also a factor.

All suggestions/thoughts welcome.

Accord, insignia, mondeo all seem to be getting good reviews around here and fit your bill... doubt a passat cc would fit that budget, but if it does, happy days. Do ye need a big saloon or do ye want the likes of a golf/ civic/ astra again?

On a serious note, you'd get a mint late 2008 or even a 2009 Laguna for that wedge. Look at this beauty !

That is a beauty all right!!! I've never seen one of those before. That particular one is a bit over budget but it looks sweet all right!

08 Saab 93 1.9 diesel..... Discontinued model but no problem with spare parts. Bought one myself 18 months ago, very happy with it

Am I right in saying the latest model Laguna has been performing really well reliability and build quality wise with no major issues at all?
