    Hi all,

I am going for my full licence in December, wondering of some small things.

Firstly, I know there is about a 5 week wait for a driving test, my 6 month period is not up until around the 13th of December, but I want to do it pretty much the day it's up for insurance reasons as my insurance will be out by then, anyone any ideas on if you can book the test a few weeks in advance online to save a spot?

Also, anyone any ideas on insurance quotes to be kept on my dads policy once I get my full licence? I'm 17 by the way and it's a 1.4 2001 ford focus? I tried asking Aviva but they won't say until the time comes. Currently I'm with aviva driving school so I was added to the insurance under my lessons for 6 months.

    Cheers,

    Curtis

You can get a quote from FBD online. You can book your test like 6 or 8 weeks before your 6 months are up, and then by the time your 6 months are up you won't have a long wait at all. Or else you could just book a cancelation soon before your 6 months are up.

Thanks so much for the fast response Dennis I will look into that now. I'd love to stay with Aviva tho so if anyone has anymore info on that it would be great!

    Thanks

FBD won't insure under a 18 year old it seems, and at that for insurance for a 18 year old is over 2.5k third party for myself, crazy prices. I'm hoping it'll only be a few 100 euro to stay as a additional driver on my dads policy.

I've been with FBD since the day I turned 17. Was on my parents insurance, and with FBD they'll put the the time spent as a named driver towards your no claims bonus. Only got my own own policy there a few weeks ago and I've got 2 years no claims. Think it was around 2100 for my own policy.

EDIT: You should check this out!

Talk to your driving instructor if you want a quote out of Aviva.

Oh? How much around were you paying to be added onto the policy as a named driver and what litre engine was it? I will be 17 but I will have a full licence and 6 months driving under my belt, if that effects the price at all I don't know.

I think it was like 1600 to be added on, it was fully comp on my mam's ford galaxy which is I think 1.9 turbo. The six months driving won't have any effect, the only thing that will effect is you passing your test, and you turning 18.

Thanks, I will try that and see what he says. I'm not too sure if they are totally linked, he's just contracted to teach the lessons. I will see what he says though! I'm just trying to pull together some prices to start getting the money together so I can get going straight away in December. Thanks!

Holy... I guess it is a big car there too, hopefully it'll drop a small bit due to the 1.4 litre and that I'm driving with them for 6 months now with no claims and no accidents I'm sure they'll take it into consideration. I won't be 18 though, not 18 until July.

I did some lessons with an instructor from Aviva who said to contact him if I was looking for insurance as he would sign off on me as being competent and simply awaiting a test or something to that effect... Basically it would reduce the learner loading.

Anyway, call aviva and when you're in the phone to them, just fudge the dates and keep other details the same, should be able to get a reasonable ballpark. Don't mention policy numbers, reg numbers, current insurers - play dumb and just give the generic details. I'm sure they hear it a million times. Even pretend that its a car you're thinking of buying or something!

Now that I think about it, I remember they gave a good deal though because of all the business vehicles my dad has with FBD, the orginal policy was over 2100 just to be put on, and that was after being with them for 4 or 5 months before my mam renewed her policy. 17 year old male on learner permit just rings serious alarm bells with these companies.

Yeah, I already have learners insurance tho so by the time I am looking for this insurance I will have my full licence, so hopefully there won't be as many tears lol

Thanks for that, I might give them a call during the week and talk to my instructor about it next time I see him, it would be nice to stay on my parents policy for a decent price, most quotes I'm getting anywhere else is 2k + and crazy prices. I have American friends younger than me driving Range Rovers and such with only a few 100 dollars to pay, it's crazy.

Hopefully! Insurance is the most painful part of driving, and it'll comfort you to know that it doesn't get much better until you hit 21 lol ;)
