Ryanair or Aer Lingus?

    So which do you prefer?

No doubt, this place will soon swarm with locusts who complain about the perfectly reasonable practices of Ryanair...and will probably complain about the cost of food on a Ryanair flight, despite the average flight being 1hr 15mins and has never advertised itself as a flying restaurant.

But there's no pleasing some people.

I've heard a good load of locusts talk about the relative 'comfort of Aer Lingus' and hence worth an extra €50, but I personally don't find the seats that much more comfortable at all and find the airline not as efficient as Ryanair so I'd tend to avoid it if at all possible.

So it's a gigantic +1 to Ryanair from me.

    What about you?

Aer Lingus for me. The extra money spent (rarely that much extra) is saved in time and money in getting to my actual destination!!

Aer Lingus. They treat you like you're an actual human as opposed to a walking sh1te stain. I wouldn't fly any further than to England with Ryanair and it's rarely much of a difference in the prices between the two airlines.

Aer Lingus for me! That little bit of extra money is well worth it to be treated like a human!

I prefer Aerlingus but fly more often with Ryanair. Ryanair just fly more places and sometimes there is no choice to get them. I don't really mind them, I don't think they are bad as they are made out and I like their policy on hand luggage, it really annoys me that you have people shoving things in the overhead locker that can't fit there.

Which part of flying to Newcastle or Edinburgh with Ryanair lands you in the Shetlands?

Which part of flying to Madrid lands you in the Canaries?

Which part of flying to Rome lands you in Corsica?

This myth is massively exaggerated by the anti-Ryanair brigade. Yes - there are some destinations which require a little extra time but this is by no means the largest amount of flights nor should be misrepresented as such.

Who cares how you're treated? It's just a bus in the sky and you're not royalty. Just sit down, follow the rules, and pay the price. That's it!

So you ask people's opinions but then when they pick the option that you don't agree with you attack their opinions....

Aer Lingus, mainly because I live near Heathrow so its easier in the long run.

    What are you talking about?

There are opinions and there are facts.

If someone misrepresents Ryanair implying a great deal of flights don't actually arrive next to the destination then this isn't a reflection of their opinion, it's a reflection of their misrepresentation of the facts.

And disagreeing sharply with someone else's facts is not 'attacking' them; in case you weren't aware, it's how a forum operates and indeed is the modus operandi of such a medium.

I dont want to fly to Madrid or Newcastle. Last 4 flights I took were Glasgow (ryanair fly to prestwick), London (Stansted was cheaper, Gatwick was more expensive than Aer Lingus), Paris & Barcelona.

All fairly big cities were the point stands

If there's just a few quid in the difference, Aer Lingus without a doubt.

But at the times (which are getting rarer) where Ryanair are way cheaper, then it's more obvious.

I'm going to The Netherlands in a couple of weeks time. It was pretty obvious who to fly with when even during the school midterm, one is half the cost of the other.

I prefer Aer Lingus because I hate all the noisy announcements on Ryanair flights.

But I fly both - sometimes Ryanair is far cheaper and sometimes they're the only option depending on where you're going.

I'm flying return to the UK for 30 euro next month with Ryanair. I'm willing to suffer some mild annoyance for that price.

I prefer Aer Lingus, but on short trips there is no contest, I always go Ryanair

Hi Michael, I'm heading to Spain in a few weeks, any chance of a few free peanuts on the flight over?

Nobody said that they don't fly to any major airports, but do try flying to Bologna or Paris and see where you end up. If you aren't aiming for the major city it's a perfectly good flight but many of us don't have the time to waste trying to get a taxi from the airport to the actual city.

I care how I'm treated. I don't fly Ryanair. This is my choice. If I wish to pay extra to be treated better that is my prerogative, not yours. I don't chastise you for flying Ryanair, you're perfectly entitled to do so.

Maybe I find 15kgs restrictive so I travel with another airline where they will offer me 20kgs and not be so black and white with their rules if I am a few kgs over. If they are more expensive I'm willing to pay for this, usually they aren't once I've added on all the extras for both airlines. There was a time 10 years ago when Ryanair were significantly cheaper but not anymore.

That's the cruz of it for me. If you're going anywhere other than England and longer than a weekend, then Ryanair can often work out more expensive. Especially with their baggage charges.

Must say that as a regular flyer, my weekly commute to/from work was by flying, I prefer Ryanair for one reason and one reason only, during the 9 years that I have been commuting this way Ryanair has very rarely been late whilst on Every occasion that I have decided to fly with Aer Lingus there has been a delay of at least an hour. so for me the decision is simple, all based on reliability.......

aer lingus, it's much more comfortable, the staff are a lot friendlier, terminal 2 is much more easy to get through than Terminal 1.

I prefer Aer Lingus but depending on price will travel Ryanair. They're all short haul flights (under 3 hours) so there's no real difference. Have had some good and bad experiences with both.

One that really irks me though is I travelled to Brussells with Ryanair a few years back. The plane had to divert to a different airport. Grand. We got off and there were buses waiting to bring us to Charleoi. Now to get to Charleoi we had to drive via Brussells city centre. They wouldn't let people get off, instead insisting that they travel to Charleoi and pay the money to get the shuttle bus back into the city. I ended up taking the local bus and a train to Brussells for in or around the same cost as Charleoi to Brussells CC.

As someone capable of travelling light (and who prefers travelling that way), it's almost always Ryanair on the basis of price for me. I also hate the turpo-props Aer Arran run for Aer Lingus Regional so I'd always go Ryanair ahead of Aer Lingus. Not sure if it's just my experiences, but over a few hundred flights in the last 5/6 years, I'd have to say I've been delayed far more frequently on Aer Lingus flights than Ryanair ones.

the being treated like a human argument is hilarious. No one even bats an eye when a dublin bus driver grunts their way through their day!

I hate Ryanair, and I mean hate, from start to finish they treat you like sh1t.

I hate their website that has all the opt out options, which they make you do twice, once when you buy and once when you check in. It take about 20 min to buy a ticket because they keep trying to sell you crap

then you get on the plane and they try to sell you more crap, they spend more time on the tannoy then they spend off it.

Their seats are tiny and as a 6f5 person I can't fit in them properly and if I want to get a seat that I can sit in, it's more money.

The staff are rude, but that's because they all work for them as temps and have no job security or benefits.

And lastly I hate that the add 30 min to the flight time just so they can play those stupid bells at the end of the flight.

Now obviously is there is a noticeable difference in price I put up with them, but it's never really that different and Aer Lingus is sometimes cheaper, especially when you factor in the €50 for your 15kg bag with 20 extra each way per kilo. Aer lingus you get 20kg and they don't really care if you are over by 2-3 kg

I'm only interested in getting from A to B, so it's Ryanair for me. I've yet to missed a flight due to "industrial action", can't say the same for Aer Lingus.

    Ryanair for me.....

people who voted for Aer Lingus....imagine if ryanair was not here, in general your flying hub would be from london and not dublin shannon derry knock cork.
And imagine what your cost would be.

just something you should think about.

so you start a thread asking people's opinions but actually have zero interest, you just want to namecall and pick apart the ones that don't agree with yours.

    Nah, you're grand thanks.
