    Should it be banned ?
Do you smoke on the course ?
Where do you put your cigarette when you have to take a shot ?
Where do you throw away the butt ?

Detest smoking in general but have no issues with guys smoking at any stage on the course so long as they put butts in bins.

Don't think it's good for golf's image to see professionals smoke on the course however. Well not Jimenez - coolest guy on tour, he can do what he likes

I do it myself - well, small cigars anyway - and I'm always conscious of seeing cigarette butts on the course, so I can understand why it would annoy non-smokers. I do make sure to throw mine into the rough where they just rot down. If a playing partner has a problem (and I've never had one who did have a problem) I probably wouldn't smoke in their company. But I have never come across someone that small-minded to be honest.

I do, maybe 3 a round. I always have water so when I'm finished I douse it and throw it into the rubbish bag I keep for food wrappers etc.

If I play with a non smoker (like my uncle)I waIt until I'm a good distance away.

Is there a filter on a cigarette - why not put it in bin ?

If someone is smoking while walking that's fine. I've seen lads on the practice green and a cigarette hanging out of the gob and the same when taking putts on the course. It's not the nicest thing to be looking at but I'd never complain.

    Nicotine is a drug right?
People smoke to help them relax right?

A drug that helps you relax during golf. Wether it legal or not.

    Fair?

I don't think it is personally. My 2 cents.

If there was any truth in it you'd have a case.

It is a myth that Smoking relaxes people, nicotine increases anxiety and stress. The myth comes from smokers getting stressed as they start to suffer withdrawal symptoms between smokes, another smoke will ease these symptoms temporarily thus causing the illusion of relaxation. But if you didn't smoke in the first place, you would have that stresser.

Its a filthy habit, I smoke on the course and I'll apologise for throwing butts around the place, this thread has highlighted how rude that is. I'd normally wait for a bin but if there are none around I'd have thrown it in the rough. That's not on in fairness.

But I'd never apologies to anyone for smoking, that's my bad habit, and as long as I don't go blowing smoke into people's faces then why would I.

I wouldn't expect a guy with a battery operated cart to apologise to me for the harm charging and disposing of that does to the environment.

I'm not a fan of smoking in general but it's outside, no real harm to your partners etc and it was good enough for Ben Hogan.

But you would see a reasonable of butts littering the course and that doesn't look good.

As with s lot of things if people would clean up after themselves I'd have no issue :-)

Even beyond AjCurry's valid point that smoking is a depressant rather than a relaxant, the point is this: on what grounds would you ban a legal substance from golf? Assuming it's nicotine you want to ban rather than tobacco, that's one rather big and ugly can of worms you're opening. Drug tests? 'He was chewing Nicorette gum, I saw it with my own two eyes', I smelled smoke on his jumper? Etc etc.

I know golf is a game of integrity and you should call fouls upon yourself, but this is something altogether different.

No problem at all with someone smoking on or off the course, but I don't think I have ever seen a smoker on a golf course throw a butt in a bin.

I just wouldn't place tobacco as a sports enhancement drug.

If I seen someone smoking on the course the last thing that would come to mind would be "cheater".

I usually wonder if he has as hard a time walking the 6km's around the course as I do :o

as long as the bin it im ok, especially when you have asummer like we just had....you could do a lot of damage with a discarded butt.

however, I do have a problem with people smoking on the tee, when im trying to take a shot....fecking smoke wafting around is annoying ( to a non smoker)

    I don't smoke -

But think it is cool on the course.

hate Ireland and it's nanny state inclination. But - bin the buts lads. Golfers - should never leave anything on a course. Maybe I'm not 100 % on the broken tee area.

I always leave a couple of putts out in the course, does that count?

    :)

Sure in America and Auz. - the lads are locked playing - we don't go near the stuff on the course.

Anyway - a funny bunch us Irish.

Played with a few lads who were into a different type of smoking on the course. They were good for a few holes then would just would do your head in.

    Another story.

I don't smoke anymore but am not an anti smoker. Don't have any problems with someone smoking on the course either as long as the butts are discarded properly.
Nothing worse that finding them in the middle of the fairway or on tee boxes - shows no respect for the course.

Can't say in all my years golfing I've ever noticed a cigarette butt anywhere on a golf course

They have a completely more relaxed attitude to drinking and driving in the US

You can actually buy little clip on holders and ash trays for golf bags. Handy for when taking a shot.

Must say it's something I haven't noticed either and I detest smoking!

Don't mind playing partners smoking as long as it's not wafting into my face.

Dont like someone smoking beside me when im on the golf course, but don't think it should be banned. I try stay away from them till they are finished. Also I think Irish people just throw butts anywhere - not just when on a golf course.

Also had a serious headache after playing with someone in a buggy before, from inhaling the fumes...

    Funny related story.

Back when smoking was banned in licensed venues in Australia (2006), clubs were required to section off at least 50% of outdoor space as non-smoking.

I've seen all manor of different implementations from the reasonable, smoking permitted on odd holes but not even. To smoking permitted on the front nine but not the back. And the ridiculous, smoking permitted on tee boxes and the left half of the fairway, but not the right half nor on the greens.

I've no issue with smoking in any outdoor space provided the butt is discarded thoughtfully.

He was talking about courses in Australia after they introduced the smoking bans for licensed premises in 2006.
Any place that had a license: 1. had to ban smoking inside and 2. could only allow smoking in 50% of their outdoor areas.
If a course had a bar, no smoking in the club house, or on half the course
