Is it possible to get Black Mesa through Steam? Or does it have to be manually added?

    Manually.

    Installation Instructions (step by step)

    1. Install Steam http://store.steampowered.com/Steam
    2. Install Source SDK 2007
From inside the Steam interface click the dropdown menu "Library" then click "Tools".
Scroll towards the bottom of the list, right click on "Source SDK 2007" and choose "Install game".
    3. Completely shut down and exit Steam
    4. Download Black Mesa
Refer to our download page here http://www.blackmesasource.com/download.html for a list of mirrors
    ~or~
Go directly to Gamefront here http://www.gamefront.com/black-mesa-is-live-download-it-here/
Scroll down to see three separate download links in green. Download all three to your desktop.
    a) blackmesa.7z
    b) BlackMesa.md5
    c) blackmesa-setup.exe
    5. Install Black Mesa
Click the file blackmesa-setup.exe to start the installation process. Be sure the game is installed to this directory: \Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\BMS
    6. Launch Steam and find the game "Black Mesa" listed in your game's "Library"

Black Mesa was 'Greenlit' on Steam earlier this year, but it is yet to be released on Steam itself.

Haven't heard any sort of an ETA as to when it could go live on Steam.

Ah, perfect. Cheers for that :) I take it the Zen section still isn't released?

yes it is. it's like playing halflife 2 except that you'll be playing levels from hl1.

i've been playing it and enjoyed it a lot.

    also, it's free.

So is it better playing this or Half Life with the HD pack addon?

This, I'd think. It redesigned a few of the puzzles and levels to make a lot more sense and improve the flow of things.

I really want to play this but its still incomplete & missing the Zen sections. Some might say thats an improvement :P but I was one of the few that actually seemed to enjoy the entire game, Zen included :o

Just bumping this thread, as the Black Mesa devs announced the game will become a commercial product; I never honestly expected that to happen! It might get messy working out who will be involved in the profit sharing, considering all the contributions the game would have got over the years:

This is fantastic news, looks like the mod is going to get another bit of an overhaul and we will see the missing last few chapters of the game.

    Woot!

    How soon is "soon"?

It seems they're going to the latest source 2013 engine which means we see all the goodies added to the likes of portal 2, assuming they avail of them. I wonder what these "extras" are in the paid version... They said Xen is a long way off yet. I hope it's co-op.
It's one of the best games I played last year. Much better than a lot of others that pass themselves off as finished, high quality games!
