    +1 on this. I can't open the links you posted in work but a cyclocross bike would best fit your requirements. You'd get a nice one for a grand too.

    I like this one. It's just about on budget. I'll also have to get pedals, pump, shorts. I haven't found any reviews though. I hope to go to a shop soon to have a look and hopefully bring it for a spin.
