Not sure if this is the correct spot for this thread....feel free to move it. Anyway - just got an open fire installed and put down a few fires. Using a mix of turf and smokeless coal at the moment but am astonished at how badly the smokeless coal sparks......or explodes to be more accurate - is this normal or did I just buy a very crappy bag of smokeless coal? I mean there were little missiles of coal flying all over the place! It's been 6 or 7 years since I've had an open fire but don't remember coal exploding like this before. If this is the norm I'm gonna have to invest in a bullet proof fire guard.

I use it sometimes in a stove and have heard the odd pop alright. I don't think you can get much more expensive a bag of fuel though. I find it very good. Maybe try something different.

I've had a the same experience usind "Bord na Mona standard smokeless", positively dangerous and very frightening.
Contacted Bord na Mona and found customer services to be very very helpful, then contacted my supplier and they replaced the "standard smokeless" with "Black diamond smokeless."
